I noticed that Joe Donahue's name has disappeared from the forum listing as a moderator for this forum.
What happened? I hope nothing unfortunate occured.
A while back, I was going to post something to the effect of "who is this Joe Donahue guy" because I cannot recall any postings by him in the time I have been here. I didn't post it for fear of sounding stupid or of offending Mr. Donahue.

Joe Donahue has been involved in astronomy for years. before Cloudy Nights was even a pipe dream Joe was posting comprehensive reviews of equipment that many of us referred to and learned from. I read Joe Donahue's reviews for years back in the 90s before I ever bought a serious piece of equipment.
Joe was one of thee original moderators of the early CN Forums where you got to post a question and the only people who could answer your question were the moderators. Like many, Joe has a life and cannot devote the time to moderate a forum.

Finally, can I say if you or,Bill Cook want any help with the mathematics or the physics of binoculars please don"t hesitate to ask. I"ll soon put you both back on the road to optical perfection. I never knew any of that. Thanks for the CN history lesson. It's always interesting to here about the various stages of development a community like this has grown through.

And now I notice that Lighttrap has vanished from the list of bino moderators. I smell a coup-de-tat in the binocular forum.....or is it a "night of the long focal lengths" that has now seated EdZ as the sole power in the bino realm.
Intrigue, power, politics, and betrayal....three mods enter, one mod remains. Congratulations EdZ on your consolidation of control. I pledge my sword to your banner.

This sounds like a Greek tragedy with the addition of a bit of optical glass. Who knew moderation could be so dangerous and, well, immoderate?

I can assure fellow members there is no link whatsoever between the departures of Joe and Mike .
It is pure co - incidence they have both made their understandable decisions within a couple of days of each other .

Thank you for providing a bit of common sense and maturity to this thread, Kenny. The position of Moderator is difficult and requires a lot of time and effort. We should thank Mike and Joe for their invaluable contributions during their watch on this forum. We also owe Ed Z a vote of thanks for his insightful posts and for the help and direction he gives to those of us who require his assistance. I am looking forward the appointment of our next moderator and, while the standard has been set high, I am confident we will have another firm voice of expertise and reason to support the sometimes disorganised chorus in which I participate all too often. Best of luck to Joe and Mike, and I hope they continue to visit often!

Thanks for the comments.
We will miss Mike's assistance, only temporarily I hope. Kenny's comments are correct.
Forum participants might also like to know that Cloudy Nights has a number of Administrators who can moderate or perform any type of action in any forum. They generally do not do so if the moderator is present.

Thanks for telling us about that Ed.

Seriously , while it's reassuring to know this to be the case , I hope this forum continues to present a minimal need for interruption or moderation as a result of any unpleasantness or inappropriate comment of any description .
I think most of us have found ways to disagree with ( and occasionally humour ) each other without falling foul of the Terms of Service .
Long may that continue !

speaking of the terms of service
isn't there something in there about what we should allow Kenny to post as an avatar?

Avatars- space depth as time passed- someone a couple of dozen light years out would see us all in our earlier, (less gone to) ground state (except of course looking through the wrong end of the binos). I would like to suggest, however (unless low parallax is an issue), that Kenny create a stereo pair of his earlier glory, so that we may see him in sweet 3-D (there is a way of crossing and uncrossing one's eyes to do this without a viewer, which I learned from Linus Pauling during my biochemical incarnation).

Hi refractory,
Yes, the 3-D effect can be obtained easily (at least by me) by swapping the left and right images.
When I do this, I infrequently print out each "side" of the images at a proper size to fit my very old and modified 3-D viewers.
However, just by crossing the eyes until the images pop into the eye/brain channel works great too.
These images, I have found, appear in a number of books on optical illusions and the like. This stuff is good fun.
Regards,
Dave.

I've noticed that, too, Steve. Your presence neatly balances the collective IQ decline that occurs when I show up. On the other hand, Kenny's arrival has had the apparent effect of increasing the avaerage follicle count per person by as much as 25%, an impressive figure, indeed!

25% you say? Oh, were that true! Unfortunately the top of my head is a lot clearer than the skies around here lately (at least a Mag 12 scalp).
Perhaps Kenny might consider permitting us to rename Coma Berenices in his honor- how about Coma Very-nice-is? Double meaning useful too. Or Hair-cules? Sagit-hair-ius? Aqu-hair-ius Alt-hair? Hair-idanus (Don't even want to think about Serpens Caput.., or Hydra).
I've got it- Kenny's (a) Minor!
