Just Picked Up a Cave Astrola 10" - Need Advice
      #6333443 - 01/24/14 06:52 PM Attachment (61 downloads)

I just picked up a 10" Cave Astrola from a garage sale. I'm trying to find more info on the model I have. Unfortunately it did not have a plaque on the OTA. The mirror is 10" the OTA is approximately 12" in diameter, and the length is 51".

Also, I want to restore it so I want to find out about the paints that were used (colors, finish, etc.). Finally, I want to repaint or flock the interior of the OTA. It's been sitting in a garage for about 20+ years so it needs some TLC. Should I just use flat black exterior paint or is there a source of flocking material that I can get the proper material from that will not shed fibers? Included are three pictures. One of the mirror inscriptions, one of the Pancro Mirror sticker, and the last of the OTA. Any input, advice, links, would be appreciated. I've checked out Turk's website so that got me motivated to restore this thing. Last question, is this a good mirror and what do the inscriptions mean? May need to be resurfaced. I'm going to give it a cleaning first to see if it's just streaks...

Thanks and clear skies!

Norm

Considering the inscribed 50 3/4" focal length and 10" diameter, this is an F/5. So does that make this Model "C" Standard Astrola f/5? I have the mount as well. Although it works, it's going to need a lot of work taking off the rust and patina!

Just saw all the responses. Looking forward to hearing more input and guidance. Thanks for the quick replies! Here's a shot of the mount.

On a side note, has anyone slapped on a long Losmandy dovetail to the rotating rings and put their Cave on a modern mount? I wouldn't mind trying it on my CGE with some of my astrophotography gear once it's back together!!!

Wow, that Pancro sticker is great. I'd try to leave that on. In the old days, Carl Newell opened his fishing reel factory within a block of that location, also on San Fernando road. I once got a tour of it before he died. Those SF Road Newels from the 50s-60s are sought after. Must be something about the street!

Gotta respect craftsmanship. I'm no Cave expert, but I'd say your scope is well worth some sweat equity.

That is definitely restorable. I have a solution for your Losmandy dovetail. I have an adapter you can build for your mount. On phone right now. Will post later.

Thanks Turk!

Just got done cleaning the mirror. Unfortunately there are some hairline scratches from the prior owner's attempts at cleaning the mirror. Couple questions: 1) how much will this affect viewing? And 2) if I get the mirror resurfaced where can that be done and how much would it run?

Thanks!

Norm

Nice scope and great find Norm! Don't see many F/5s, but if you click on the link in my signature below there is a thread about mine. Enjoy, love those Caves .

Perhaps the scratches are only in the coating and not through in the glass. A recoat would not cost much. Either way, it's fixable. It is also possible that the scratches will not make a difference in visual use. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Here are a couple shots of the mirror after cleaning. They look superficial and probably at the aluminized layer. How much does a re-coat run and where are some respectable places? Also, any in Southern California? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Norm

Another shot of the mirror. Forgot that I can only post one image at a time (or I'm just lame and haven't figured out multiple attachments...).

Hi Norm, the OTA looks like it's in good shape, the mount just needs a little bit of work. I've restored 2 of the mounts like the one you have, one of them is documented here in the CN Archives: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbarchive/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3518871/page...

If the mirror has never been recoated, then it's a good time to get it done while you are restoring the mount. Most recoating places will put the mirror on the bench for testing either for free or for a small extra charge, which may be a good idea if you are concerned about the quality of the optics.

There are quite a few folks on CN Classics to help you through the restore and it doesn't take too much effort or time to tear apart the mount and redo it. It looks like a nice scope and congratulations on finding it!

I would advise going to Carl Zambuto's or Mike Lockwood's website and see who they recommend for recoating service.
