Flying tents -- very funny. And are the eggs really blue?

And naps! Don't forget the naps!

Eggs are blue to green to brown with shades in between. Of course, we're just talking about the *shells*.

Gosh Steve, if you just show up without a camera you might have to violate your personal convictions and actually look through telescopes or binoculars or something. If you lower yourself to that sorry state you can be sure that I won't tell.

*BLEEP* are you insinuating I don't do visual observing??

LOL I actually do plenty of visual.

In fact, the night before the lunar eclipse last night, I had spent a lot of time doing visual on Mars.

Steve, I humbly beg your forgiveness. I only thought, since a broken camera might keep you home, well, . . .

And how good were your Mars views?

The most recent views?

Meh, I've had better nights. Not so great. In fact, I should've known better to take the telescope outside on a night with a lot of wind!

An approaching cold front threw the upper atmosphere into a rich turbid mess. Mars looked as though I was looking at it through a bowl of cloudy Jell-O.

As for the camera? Meh... I mean, it still works - barely - it's more or less the aspect of me not being able to use it to operate my photography business. The worst part is I've only had it for two years - I bought it brand new.

I'm expecting the payment to drop from Warner Bros. and then a payment from an eBay sale to drop - which might net me the $ to get one and still raise enough to make the trip.

We'll see! I won't count this out just yet!

Good, so i wasn't the only one thinking that Mars looked like a bowl of cloudy Jello that night. After dragging the CPC1100 out to the neighborhood park, it was disappointing. The only thing i could make out was the polar icecap occasionally. Wasn't sure whether it was the scope or the air or the full moon. Saturn peeking up over the horizon was nice though. It'll look real nice in a month or two.

Now my own goals for Goldendale, notwithstanding the blue eggs, are to manage to run my CPC1100 semi-remotely from under my canopy while reclining on my camping chair. But it's amazing the number of obscure pieces you have to acquire in order to do that...

LOL I couldn't even make out the ice cap - it was too wobbly.

I made the mistake of setting up the camera and recorded a series of five one-minute videos for stacking.

Not a single one ended up being worthy of sending to Registax.

Sounds delish!

Too bad that I can't come.

But....if things change, is it still okay for late comers?

As a first timer going to this event and also relatively new to star gazing, anything else I should be prepared for that I may have not thought of bringing? I read the intro so I have a general idea, it may get cold, windy, bring water, ect...I also have some other questions...

- is dew a problem?
- can i get a recommendation for red flash lights? I have a small one but it may not be enough light.
- are coleman fuel stoves allowed?
- are there activities nearby that can be done during the day? besides sleeping of course.
- mosquitoes/bugs a problem?
- do most people stay a night or both nights?
- is it rude for me to ask to peek through someone else's scope? I've only seen sights through my 8'' dob and am super curious to see what other scopes are like.
- would my honda fit be ok to drive to this site (not sure how "off road" the terrain is.

Thanks!
-Ryan the newb

Seawolfe, Yes!! See my response to your question on the Pac NW thread.

Quote:

Early in the year like this, dew can be a problem one night in 3 or 4. Of course the "ones" can be back-to-back, depending on weather.
Quote:

Probably your small one would be more than adequate. Personally, I prefer headlamps to flashlights because they keep both hands free & mouth free simultaneously. A problem can be that lights are too bright. I have a Petzl headlamp with flip-down red filter that I use, although it's on the bright side.
Quote:

Absolutely. Forbidden are open fires & charcoal grills.
Quote:

Yes. I hope others will chime in on this. Short list: hiking, biking, fishing, geocaching, museum(s), writing observing plans, G/dale observatory, wineries, games, music, naps . . .
Quote:

- do most people stay a night or both nights?

Both, but one is OK. Many people stay 3 or more nights. I think Cliff said he would arrive Wed. and I'll arrive Wed. or Thurs. May stay until Monday.
Quote:

- mosquitoes/bugs a problem?

Mosquitoes, not at all. There will be ticks in the taller brush, so check your socks & cuffs if you kick through any, and if you bring a dog you should pre-treat for ticks.

Shared views are always welcome. ("Whatcha looking at?")

No problema.

Good questions all. I'm looking forward to seeing you! Be sure to look at the information in the opening post in this thread (January, I think.)
