Yea BradleyB!

See you there. Depending on forecast I may arrive on Thursday and stay until Monday.

I have a new APO and some new (to me) binos to relish the sparkling MW.

Just the 5, OK 6 counting my little Cabels's 8X30's

But I really have not got to use the Ultima's but they are on their way finely after a 6 month trip to Japan and back for repair. I have only used the ProStar once or twice, so looking forward to that. Of course the venerable 10X50 Fuji's should be quite a treat. Might have to have a strictly binocular night.

I have more umbrellas than you have binoculars.

I had an umbrella last for almost 30 years until it finally had enough. Since then I've gone through 8 umbrellas....very cheaply made, hardly stand up to a breeze or just break when opened after the 10th time. It doesn't matter if they're an $8 or $25 model either.

The current one I have is a London Fog with a light at the handle base. I've had to repair it and the handle four times, but I still use it....only had it about a year.

Something to look for during this time.... Comet C/2012 K1 Panstarrs should be just west of the Big Dipper... Use Dubhe and Merak going backwards from as you would use them for finding Polaris and the comet should be in that direction at close to +8.0 mag.

I read about it on the May 2014 issue of The Sky at Night, page 47.

We worked the comet from Camp Delaney. Nice and bright with a small tail visible. Just off off of Alkaid at about mag 8.5 or so.
it will be moving for a close pass of m51 by the end of the month.

Great to hear that! How was Camp Delany? Hardly any breaks in the clouds and rain here on the west side of the mountains.

Really looking forward to next month.

BTW, besides the directions, are there any "special" rules other than the "come early, no backup lights, cover your dome lights, park facing away from the general set up area, dim RED flashlights, cover laptops, tablets and cell phones with red film, no flash photography after viewing time gets started, no alcohol...etc."?

Those common courtesy rules are unwritten, with the exception of the alcohol ban, which should be written, "Consumption of alcoholic beverages which do not pass the strict quality control standards of the host or his designee may cause unhappiness." Other "special" rules are imposed or rescinded without warning or logical basis, according to the whim of the host.

We'll have a bunch of good people there, helping each other enjoy their stay. Just be thoughtful of others.

Camp Delaney was a lot of fun. The weather can be a *BLEEP* shoot in the spring, but never been skunked. The sky there can be incredible.
The best view of M51 I have ever seen , bar none, was last spring.
We got an SQM reading of 21.60 at 11pm last Sat. Not too shabby for that early. I will be back there in the fall!!

Intersting Ron, I got the same SQM reading, glad our machines agree and you are right, not bad for that early! See you at Goldendale, my friend.

Have any of us heard what the long-range forecasts are for that weekend?

I'm sure hoping this rain doesn't stick around!

It is a long range forecast and that can change as we all know, but Accuweather is stating sunny and upper 70s, sounds great to me! I will be there Wednesday through Sunday and am really excited to be under the night sky, at least for a few hours each night!

Are you actually talking about forecasts for the star party period? "Predictions" more than 7-10 days in advance are no more accurate than a die roll.

And remember that the SP location gets many more sunny days and clear nights annually than the west side.

We can't help but be excited and a little optimistic after all the rain. As I mentioned in my post long range forecasting is a roll of the dice, but it is nice to hope!
