BackyardNIKON, ask me anything!
      #6337064 - 01/26/14 04:40 PM

I'm starting this thread because I've been getting a gazillion questions about the future release of BackyardNIKON. Okay, not a gazillion but enough that it deserves its own thread.

Please note that it is called BackyardNIKON and not BackyardNIK. This is because NIK means the F* word is a foreign language... so I will respectfully name it BackyardNIKON.

So, ask me anything.

Thank you

Guylain

Sorry, I could not stop laughing. I know which language you are referring to. To be fair, the word is not "Nik" but rather "Neek" in that language.

Alright!

Here goes: Which Nikon DSLR's will be supported and to what degree? I'm especially curious about the D5100 and D3200, since I own both.

The D5100 will be supported, I actually have 2 for testing.

The D3200 will not be supported. Sadly Nikon did not release an Software Development Kit (SDK) for the D3### line up.

I have a D90, D5100, D7000 for testing currently.

I do plan to purchase a D5200 and/or a D800 also but I need to purchase model wisely. It's becoming expensive to own all models and I don't really need to own all of them. But I need at least one model that does support BULB over USB and the D90, D5100, D7000 (which I currently own) do not.

Thank you

Guylain

Yep, but I need/want to respect everyone still... even if it's only pronunciation

I do want BackyardNIKON to become a household name and sometimes kids are around at star parties

Guylain

Great that there will be support for the D5100! Any idea on a release date?

I'm not familiar with the Nikon line and I apologize for my question.
Is it possible to support any of the interchangeable lens mirrorless Nikons ?

I'm guessing about 2 months of work still. This is a weekend/weeknight gig for both myself and Chris. We both have demanding full time jobs

Late March is my target date now for initial BETA testing..

BackyardNIKON is meant to work with the Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) line up; they are the D##, D###, and D#### camera where Nikon has and SDK for. It will start with the D90 camera (maybe some earlier models but I'm not sure yet) up to the latest models except the D3### series as no SDK is available.

The mirrorless models are a different beast and not part of the same SDK modules. They will not be supported sadly, just as the Canon mirrorless lineup is not supported in BackyardEOS.

Thank you

Guylain

Good luck...Paul

Looking forward to using this on my D7100, It's not the best for AP but has done great on short exposures so far.

Any chance for the D600?

The D600 is fine and should work, but I will need -you- (hint hint) to run a few tests for me once BETA is released

Thank you.

You mentioned you "might" purchase a D800...

I very much would like to see D800 support, mainly because that's what I have. Of course, if you have a lot of Nikons already, I don't know if you can justify paying what a new D800 runs.

It is a great camera, BTW. However, part of me missed the D700 I had prior to it. Despite the D700 not having time lapse/video capabilities.

I personally don't have the D600 nor the financial capital to purchase one.

However, I believe a friend of mine has one.

I will let him know.

Thanks guys, I will definitely call upon you guys to test/support the cameras I don't have for sure.

I own 7 Canon model yet I support almost 30 models in BackyardEOS

Looks like I'll be able to do the same with BackyardNIKON with all those volunteers

Thank you so much, your Nikonian friends will appreciate your help for sure.

Regards,

Guylain
