Anyone who hasn't bought a sand blaster should! new [Re: TCW]

I used the "savings" of not powdercoating to justify buying a small (sub $100) Harbor Freight sand blasting box. Wow, why haven't I bought one of these before! Fun to use and amazingly effective! I'll post a few pictures of before and after...

Bead blasting left the texture of the metal intact so it's perfect for the look I'm trying to achieve.

Finder scope cleaning new [Re: HBNorm]
      #6345764 - 01/30/14 06:38 PM Attachment (8 downloads)

I ran into issues of moisture in my compressor so I had to take a break for the rest of today to dry out my compressor and to reset the inline moister filter in the oven.

As such, I killed some time with my finder. I may leave the oxidized aluminum on the rear OTA cap. Not sure if I want to sand and repaint...

I kept all of the stickers intact during the cleaning (one on EP, two on objective dew shield) to keep it original.

Fresh electrical tape applied after polishing and waxing the OTA to keep with the "OEM" theme.

Took the objective out and cleaned both sides. Under that layer of thick dust/dirt was a nice coated doublet!

Here's what I got done today. I'll get the rest done tomorrow and start working on the pier tube...which is severely rusted!

Justin, I've never had a sand blaster box before. They're awesome! There are so many projects around the house I could have used this on...let alone the cave!

Greg,

I have a 21 gallon compressor from Harbor Freight. There's a story attached to it... Last year, I was walking up to the store and some really upset customer pulled the compressor out of his car and was yelling at the poor clerk from the store saying how it didn't work and that Harbor Freight sucked. He just left it and yelled a few expletives, got back in his car and took off. Thinking I could fix it and sizing up the upset customer as someone that doesn't look too skilled with his hands, I asked the lady if I could have it and she said yes. She also offered to replace it for free as that was what she was trying to offer to the jerky customer. I walked out with a brand new compressor!

Wow! Impressive. How did you clean the eyepiece barrel and holder so well? It looked like the chrome was pitted. It came out as new!

Thanks! I used a little water and 000 steal wool. I had some very fine Scotchbrite but it seemed a little too rough. I didn't want to hurt the chrome. There are some pits but they're very small so very unnoticeable...

When I had the new tube for the Horsetrail Cave powder-coated, I think it was around $250 - I didn't think that was too bad considering the size and the area to coat - which was equal to 4'x8'.

Polishing aluminum [Re: Datapanic]

Got to work on the setting circles and the trim piece. Really bad pitting and oxidation. Didn't want to sand too deep but they still came out nice.

Here's the before:
