Steve: Welcome to Cloudy Nights!

I am having trouble picturing how the worm could be held in place with tape and am wondering if terminology is being mixed up. Would you mind posting a picture of the problem part/damage/wear? Seeing the damaged part may help here.

The mount itself looks like an EQ-2 equivalent but with a full range of motion on DEC (instead of a tangent adjustment like my older EQ2).

I actually own a similar 114mm aperture newt (144mm = 4.5") on a similar mount, only without the fancy drives. If the mirror is in good shape you should do well with the setup, especially for viewing targets like Jupiter (jupiter is a good one right now).

In the short term even if the drives are not working you can still get pointed at a bright target like Jupiter and just manually nudge with the RA axis lock disengaged. Just make sure your scope is as well collimated as you can manage so you get a clear view. If this is your first newt or first scope just google collimating a newtonian and you will find *many* instructions for doing so.

I believe that this is the same mount. It would provide that worm assy plus plenty of extra parts...

Steve: Welcome to Cloudy Nights!
Thanks!
the tape job is just to keep the telescope from moving all over the place the gears where really worn out.
other then that it has no purpose..
gear does not work at all
and if I cant get motorized its still a good beginner telescope.
thanks again

The mount and controller will run fine on 12VDC. It was originally supplies with a 15VDC battery pack on the assumption that the AA battery voltage would quickly drop to 12V.

There was a Meade #506 cable/converter assembly for PC use with the 494 Autostar (electrically the same as the Starfinder but different firmware) but I think that connected to an aux jack on the mount and I don't think the DH4 has an aux jack.
