Four Day Old Waning Lunar Crescent
      #6356800 - 02/05/14 12:28 AM Attachment (20 downloads)

An unusually clear winter day here in Chicagoland with high clouds racing towards us in front of our next round of snow. As twilight began the Moon remained at a good altitude for sketching as long as I worked quickly. During this sketch earthshine became exceptional but high thin clouds began to erase the fine view and heavy clouds ended the sketch before I finished.
Sketching:
For this sketch I used black sketching paper (12” x 14”), white and black Conte’ pastel pencils, blending stumps, white Pearl eraser.

Telescope 4.25”f/5 Dobsonian riding on an equatorial platform, 21mm wide field eyepiece 26x
Date and Time: 02-03-2014; 17:30 – 18:25 local time
Seeing: mostly Antoniadi III
Transparency: clear to overcast
Temperature: -6.7 °C (20°F)
Colongitude: 315.8°
Lunation: 3.85 days
Illumination: 20%
Favorable longitudinal libration

Frank

Frank, that's quite nice with the various albedo features and such. Interesting perspective of a whole moon sketch.

One project I thought might be nice is to sketch the entire moon in detail...night after night until a mosaic of sketches comprise it's surface down to the last detail. But, I cannot draw a single crater much less all of them.

You could do it, though.

Frank, I'm sorry I missed this one...it's incredible!!! Really, a superb piece of artwork! Man, I struggle to work in reverse. But your grasp of the "white on black" approach makes for an excellent example of how it's done. I bow.

Louie, Norme, Jay and Jason,

Thanks guys. Years ago we had a discussion here about sketching different targets, Moon, planets, sun, galaxies, nebula etc. I believe we agreed that you have a comfort zone for some but usually not all categories of targets. Each requires different tools and approaches.
We also like sketching those features we point our scopes at with high frequency.
---
Norme,

That would be a fun project for someone with more than 3 or 4 clear nights a month. For me it would take more than a year but would be doable (maybe).

Frank

Yea, it would be a nice project with some challenges, for sure. Yea, you know...on cloudy nights you can spend time with the family instead of being drawn (pun intended) outside on every clear night especially if they are frequent.
