I have read a lot of "buy your first telescope" articles and yours is by far the best. Loved the analogies. Required reading for all considering that first scope.

Thanks much.

Great article. Wish this year's Christmas shoppers would take it seriously!

Very enjoyable read. Not sure about the combined value AND enjoyment graph (enjoyment decreases with expenditure beyond $1,000?)
Anyway sound advice for the newcomer.

Wol

Wol,
Thanks. The purpose of that graph is to show that there are great value telescopes in a moderate price bracket for people just starting out. Everyone who really gets into this hobby creates their own personal value/enjoyment curve beyond that point

This would be an excellent handout for visitors and newbies to astronomy clubs contemplating a first scope purchase. Is it appropriate to print it off for such use?

thank you for this -well written- piece. I had no idea I could get a "good" telescope for under $400... I've always had a particular affection for "pickup trucks" Now I know why :-)
yes, i'm a total newb.

Sorin, thank you for this article. It made the choice easier. My first telescope will be a 6" or 8" dob.

This was a good read. Wish I had found it before I bought my first "real" telescope, a few weeks ago, lol. Still, I think, after reading it, that I did okay.

Good article! I find one glaring omission though. One that many of us have, and use successfully for both visual and photography; an SCT mounted on a wedge.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

kd4pbs, I certainly think there is a lot more that could be covered, including many other types of scopes, but I wanted to keep it short enough to be readable and provide a good foundation for others to build their understanding on.

Thanks,
Sorin
