Counterweight requirements for C8 Edge HD
      #6362263 - 02/07/14 03:51 PM

Hi there everyone, just received delivery of my C8 Edge HD, which will reside on my Vixen SXW EQ. The mount was delivered with just a single 1.9Kg counterweight. I suspected that this would not be sufficient for the 'Edge' and had my suspicions confirmed when I attempted a little balancing exercise earlier today. I imagine that I should only need one additional counterweight, for visual work, however I was wondering if anybody on CN has experience with this combination, and could provide some insight into counterweight requirement for prime focus AP with a DSLR on this outfit.

Thanks in advance
Paul J.

If it is not wildly off balance, you will be fine for visual. MY Edge 800 balances with one 11-pound weight on the VX, but the VX has a longer counterweight bar than most GEMs in its size class.

Hi Paul,

I have a Meade 8-inch LX200 SCT OTA (a little heavier than the Celestron 8-inch Edge) that I use on my Vixen SXW mount and it's perfectly balanced with only one Vixen SX 8.1 lbs. counterweight at the end of the counterweight bar (with margin left for adjustment).

The configuration of my 8-inch SCT for visual observing includes: Vixen-type dovetail, 2-inch visual back, 2-inch Everbrite Diagonal, 35mm Panoptic eyepiece (2-inch), Stellarvue 50mm RACI finderscope, red dot finder and a lightweight dew shield. I don't do astrophotography.

Good luck!

Hey there guys. Thanks for your comments. The single counterweight included with the mount is the smaller 1.9Kg (4.1 lb) weight. So my question is answered, I need that second weight :-)
