Two bright comets in one FOV:You must look at them new
      #6365379 - 02/09/14 02:33 AM Attachment (35 downloads)

This morning I observed the comets Lovejoy (2013R1) and Linear (2012X1). Both have a magnitude around 8 and are close together (<3deg) in the Ophiuchus. They fit well in the FOV of my pair of 16x70 biniculars which shows them clearly. They were visible in my 7x50 too.

There are some days remaining before the moon disturbs the observation in the morning sky. You mus see this! It is a wonderful view. It reminds me my 2006 observation of the two bright parts of 73P in May 2006 (which gave a more impressive view, of course).

Uwe, hey, I appreciate your enthusiasm and thanks for sharing such an interesting view. I bet it was nice. Yea, a couple of nights and the moon will be in the way and the comments will move some what. Will they get closer or further apart? Anyone know?

Today 2.4 deg, tomorrow 2.7 deg, the day after tomorrow 3.1 deg. The closest distance was the day before yesterday, 2.0 deg.

I wish the weather here was cooperating as was my health. Alas, I may miss this. Thanks for posting Uwe, as your sketch shows how close they are. Love how you labeled here.

Uwe,
Nice catch. You have documented both perfectly. Binocular observing is a fun and challenging time.

Uwe, thank you for the heads up! First off, this is a terrific observation. I get a very good sense of the field here. If my CSC is accurate I should have a good opportunity between 5-6am tomorrow. I'll make sure to set the 15x85 binocular on the mount before bed tonight.

Uwe, I tried for this earlier this morning. Twilight started creeping in by the time I was done with early morning puppy duty. I was able to catch one, but not both of the comets. I am aiming to try again tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration.

Uwe

A most excellent observation! And excellent information that you have provided.

As weather allows here I will try to see this beautiful pair of comets.

Thank you for posting.

Thanks, Uwe. Tried again this morning. Still only seeing Lovejoy. I really need to hit the skies earlier.

Uwe, I just wanted to share with you that I got out 30 minutes earlier this morning and finally caught them in my 8x40 binocular (barely), and then had a wonderful view in my 15x85 binocular. I spent 20 minutes studying the finder charts right before bed, so when I awoke they were fresh in my memory.

Oh yeah, and it was -5F (-21C). Brutal.

Anyway, thanks for sketching this. It gave me a heads up for the observation.

Here in Germany we have a period of unusually mild temperatures which makes it easier a lot to go out.

I am glad to read that you were sucessful.
