OK so I was only going to take some pictures of the moon last night when I dragged out my 8" Meade SCT...well then I got to thinking; HMMM I'm already out here. So I ran a few stacks of 150 seconds, 120 seconds, and 10 seconds to put this little image together. 2000mm FL, @f/10, Full spectrum Canon 1000D

Not too shabby for a seat of the pants shot
with the old SCT!! That 1000D is doing a fine job with the mod.
I think I need to pick your brain about doing the mod to mine.
It was purchased with the intent to make an astro camera.

Looks great Robert! Did you do a clear mod on the 1000D? I just modded mine and I left the Lpf1 filter in place. It seems to be working fine. I am debating whether I should remove it or not. Of course if I did I would have to use a luminance clip on filter.

Andy

We're planning another astro-outreach night at Shadow Lake Bog on the last weekend of March. It's in Maple Valley.

Shadow Lake Bog

If there's any interest here I'll post all the pertinent info as it becomes available.

It's a naked sensor! no filters in the camera. Not even a filter frame in the camera I just use a UV/IR in my camera adapter.

Sure it's not really a big deal on the 1000D. No soldering just screws and ribbon cables

Very cool! I had two naked sensor Canons on the past. With this one I decided to try and leave the front filter in place... We'll see how it performs.

Tried a new cloud filter yesterday. Didn't work.

Oopsy!

Details aren't set yet. Tentatively going to set this up for Friday night with Saturday night as a backup - weather dependent.

Thanks, Tom. That's a well-done website. A map link would be a plus. I'd like to visit the place regardless of astro outreach.

The center and office are here (green arrow on map). The boardwalk into the bog also starts here.

Google map

The observing field is about 1/4 mile to the SSE.

not much here Stacy, just trying to stay dry!
This new moon cycle was a bust but I was able to head out on Friday for a quick test of my new SkyTracker. This is the result with Canon XS modded and Samyang 85mm at f2.8.
only 57 2minute subs.

What you'd expect to be going on during cloudy season -- not a whole lot.
I was a bit bummed this weekend though -- I'd been hoping to take my scope out Friday night since it looked like it'd be clear till Midnight or so at Rattlesnake Lake at least. But i came down with a cold instead, bleah.
Bummer, since i haven't had my scope out since way back last March.

But now, Rattlesnake Lake is looking like this. Is it my imagination, or is one of those squares slightly less white? Is that enough for a NW starwatcher?

It was clear on Friday at Rattlesnake Lake. The problem is that the lights at the gate are on all the time now. That makes it pretty much unusable unless we setup on the hill by the road. We need to find a better spot, maybe with less traffic too.

What about the Iron Horse Trail trailhead? Looks intriguing but I haven't made it there yet. (See John Harold's post here and discussion after).

It does sound interesting. I was looking at it a while ago on Google maps. The only concern is the power lines. Would those get int he way of imaging? I have no experience with that.

Hope you guys feel better soon. Remember, you can take cold remedies, vitamin C, bed rest and drink lots of fluids and it will get better in a week; or you can do nothing and it will take seven days.
