Original Vixen Polaris Mount manual?
      #6376895 - 02/14/14 09:40 PM

Anyone know where I can find a manual for the original Vixen Polaris mount? Picked up a really nice example of one and would like to find a manual to figure out a couple things about it.
Thanks

I don't know where you can get a manual, but if you tell us your questions, maybe we can help.

I have a pdf of a manual for a Comet Catcher on the Polaris mount. It does have some info, but nothing in the way of pictures. I can e-mail to you if you like. It's about 1 MB.

Close, but no cigar. He's looking for the original Polaris mount. That one is the Super Polaris. I tried looking for the Polaris manual when I got one and had very little luck. Lots of stuff on the Super Polaris though.

Yes, I have looked for a Polaris manual in the past and was not able to find one.

But there is not much to it. Again, if you have any questions I am sure we can answer them.

The RA circle is also used to align the polar finder, and the later manuals for the SP and GP were almost impossible to undersand on that point (using the hour circle to properly polar align using the finder) so I can't imagine that the Polaris manual (even if you can find one) would do a better job of describing this. The Polaris circle is actually better than on the later mounts (in my opinion), and works well if properly polar aligned to actually use the manual setting circles, but again, the instructions on using the polar finder was pretty horrible in all the manuals I had seen.

But the circles themseves work like any others and are calibrated in the same way.

Again, if you have quesitons, I am sure someone here can help.

Thanks guys. I even contacted Vixen and they don't have anything available.

I am getting things figured out but just feel a manual would help a LOT.
Too bad no one has one as it seems several people would like to lay their hands on one.
Thanks again

Checked the '80s Celestron Product Guide and Reference Manual. Only one mention of the Polaris and it shows up in only in one photo of the C6.

"Other standard features include a 6 X 30 finderscope to help you locate objects in the sky and, a Polaris equatorial mount with adjustable tripod. This mount consists of the following components: an equatorial head, setting circles, motion locks, manual slow motion controls and counterweight(s).
.....
Setting Circle Diameter...........R.A. - 90MM (3.5") DEC- 82mm (3.2")
Electric Clock Drive .........Optional Pulse Motor Drive
Slow Motions .............................Manual
Polar Axis Finder ...............Optional"

I knew I'd just seen it (I've been looking for a couple of months). If you google for celestron 4.5 manual you'll find it (it's at one of those aggregator sites). Here's a Dropbox link though:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/406343/c45.pdf

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/26527/Celestron-C4-5.html

Enjoy. I just got my Polaris out over the past few weeks and it's a joy. I'm going to have to take it down and regrease it though b/c it's awful stiff after sitting in a box for the past 10 years.

I've seen the instructions for the polar scope someplace and I'll post those as soon as I find them. From what I remember, though, the SP polar scope is the same as the Polaris polar scope, and the instructions are the same. (That should make it easier to find a polar scope...)

If the link doesn't work just PM me.

The polar scope is different for the SP than for the Polaris mount. You can tell from the photos, it looks nothing like my SP polar scope.

I saw on Astro Parts Outlet there is an "adapter" for the Polaris mount that will allow a CG-4 polar scope to attach to it. Might be worth checking out if you are interested, it is cheap ($20).

The polar scope is the same body as was an option with the CG-5 - about 9/16th" in diameter and 4" long. As a Polaris option it came with a hub that threads on the lower RA spigot. The hub permits alignment of the scope. Installtion of the scope interfers with Alt/Az use. Probably easier to use your GLP in the RA axle.

I've been looking for a Vixen Polaris mount manual for a number of years ... no luck! I'm beginning to wonder if Vixen ever printed a manual for this mount. The closest I've seen is a limited instruction manual when the mount was paired with a Vixen OTA ... never one for just the mount alone.

BTW ... here's an image of the polar scope from my Polaris mount:

You can download a copy of the Celestron C4.5 telescope manual that includes a section on the Vixen Polaris mount from here http://www.manualslib.com/manual/26527/Celestron-C4-5.html

Mine has an illuminator, but I don't have a pic (it's buried in a box someplace). Looks essentially the same.

I wish I could find exploded isometrics for this mount, similar to the SP link above.
