Old Jason 313 tripod - adaptation options?
      #6399106 - 02/26/14 08:50 PM

I have an old Jason 313 with the classic wooden tripod and manual EQ mount. I have seen some decent deals on used GOTO mount heads. So I was thinking maybe I could adapt this tripod to accept a Celestron or other manufacturer GOTO mount head... is this feasible? Or should I just fugget about it?

Al

You'd be better off selling the scope to a classic scope collector and just buy a new mount.

I kept my Jason and scrapped the mount and tripod.

Al, good for you! I still have my first scope, also a Jason, but a much lower grade. It's still a good scope though with better than expected optics.

So, keep it as is, clean and polish it (a survivor) and go some other direction independently of your Jason. You won't be sorry.

post a picture of the tripod please. It will be easier to see if it will accept the head off another manufacturers mount.

I wouldn't mess with it. That kind of Frankenmount rarely works out.

I have two of the 313's and as said above, leave it as is and get a new/used goto of different design. I do use other scopes on this 313 mount/tripod combo, but I keep them light weight...C80SS, C90 and of course, the original 60mm Towa.
Now with that said, you can beef up the tripod with newer solid hard wood dowels, cut to the desired length so as to not extend and actually rest on the base of the mount itself, and inserted into the existing spreader portion of the tripod. Basically, discard the lower, extending dowels for new oak or whatever. I did this and it does indeed improve the stability of the mount. The instability of the original arises from extending those balsa wood dowel legs and having a gap in the spreader portion allowing a twisting moment of the tripod.

Let me restate. If the legs come off you cane use them on a different mount without destroying the value of the old mount.

I have seen some cheap GOTO heads like SLT/nexstar/prodigy. And for my PST I was thinking about repurposing this tripod. But not a big deal in any case....
