Hello Guys
I am willing to know about the big Porro Zeiss binoculars - I have read that the Oldies 15x60's (about 70's) uses semi-apo lenses while the new (also descontinued) BGA/T* do not use it - Which are the main differences between both (beyound of course their rubber armor, better eye relief,etc) they performance (edge performance, transmission, contrast, sharpness) are more or less similar or the BGA/T* are quite superior??
Have somebody tried both side by side?? Any comments?

There was once a two - way comparitive review available on the internet re - these two binoculars .
I found it about 4 years ago , but cannot remember HOW I arrived upon it -- probably via google search engine .
I cannot seem to find it via google now .
I think fellow CN member Dr. Holger Merlitz knows something about the review I'm referring to .
I do know the final verdict of the author was that in his opinion , there was VERY little to choose between the two , with each one having slight advantages over the other , in different ways .
I'll tell you something .
It was looking through a Zeiss 15 x 60 Oberkochen ( which belonged to a school friend's father ) on a summer day in 1966 , which REALLY gave me a deep lying desire to one day OWN a REALLY good binocular .
It was almost certainly THAT magical moment which provided the passion I have for binoculars .
I'm almost certain that if I hadn't have gone to that house on that day , I would not be sat here typing this to you now , or ever have joined this , or any other binocular forum .
Through my young eyes , the views were truly AWESOME !
It was a view I've been searching for ever since , really .
At the time ( with what I know NOW but didn't then ) it SEEMED as if I were looking through a bright , crystal clear , 20x binocular with a 4 degree TFOV -- or something like that !

Kenny, I find it heart warming that a few choice moments back in the summer of 1966 could become a pivotal point in your life.
If you were one of the poor unfortunate folks like myself who grew up in the San Francisco area in the '60s you'd likely not remember a thing! I think once I actually thought I WAS a binocular!

Hi Kenny,
I had a similar inspiration, however it was in 1957. My father and I went up to the local college stadium in Fairmont, West Virginia (WV), U.S.A.
We viewed comet Arend Roland--spectacular thru my young eyes. I too was hooked. I remember the binocular well, a coated Polamar 7x50. That became two monoculars some years later, one of which I loaned to a good friend.

Seriously, that very same comet got me hooked on astronomy as well. I was fascinated that this "previously unknown" object could slowly move through the sky. Some memories of youth can be vivid!

Well I believe based in your comments the old Oberkochen are really great!! did you never look through a BGA/T* pair after that and have there some ''by memory'' comparison??
I have seen (sometimes) some Oberkochen 15x60's (mint condition) sold for about U$ 1.000 - U$ 1.200!!
