Mars Feb 17, 2014 new
      #6399172 - 02/26/14 09:36 PM Attachment (56 downloads)

This observation was made in the late evening to early morning hours, using my 102mm f/10 and 70mm f/13 achro refractors. As luck would have it I caught the same bland side of Mars that I had caught in my morning observation of Feb 4. However, this time the NPC was distinct and I could tell the ice has receded since I started observing Mars features in October 2013. Also, the limb haze and haze at the southern part of the planet covered a large area and was very bright. The Hellas Basin was really, really bright. I could make out some of the darker areas toward the south, as well as the dark areas rimming the NPC.

In this sketch I made an ink sketch showing the limb haze and bright regions, darker regions (including noting where Syrtis Major was hiding under the limb haze) as well as the NPC. The color sketch shows the view of Mars as I observed it through the eyepiece.

Ed,
Nice observation and sketch. I have yet to try my new binoviewers in my C102. Weather has not been very good.

Great sketch, I have read that the Hellas Basin is very bright with ice this apparition.

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback - Muchas gracias.

I didn't realize it at the time, but the format of this sketch loosely resembles the format of the Mars Observing Forms found on the ALPO website. As I continue to observe and gain experience I continue to refine my records and sketches. In addition to the ALPO website, an old but good book that has helped is SKY WATCHER'S HANDBOOK (Muirden). The planetary chapters contain a lot of useful info on observing and keeping records.

Ed D,
Excellent observation and set of sketches. I am a big fan of including a diagrammatic sketch as well as the eyepiece view.
