Ring galaxies
      #6427745 - 03/25/14 01:33 AM Attachment (44 downloads)

In our German astronomical magazine "Sterne und Weltraum" (stars and universe) I read an article about ring galaxies. Some of the mentioned objects were quit bright so I decided to find ring structures with my 32 cm Dobsonian. I observed NGC 3718, 2685 and 2859. Hints of ring structures I found at 2685 und 2859. NGC 2859 is located in the very near of two 7 mag stars which had to be outside of the field stop.- NGC 3718 is an Arp galaxy and was peculiar indeed, but I could not see the faint ring structure.

Without ring but worth sketching: NGC 3718.

Uwe,

Excellent observations of three interesting ring galaxies (NGC 2685/2859/3718). Congratulations on detecting the ring segments.

Uwe,

These are excellent sketches of these selected galaxies.
I especially like NGC 2859 which shows very fine detail for a ring galaxy.
Well done.

Frank

Thank you for your comments. I was astonished to see something of the ring structures at all. But that was not an easy task. SQM reading at my rural observation site was 21.0.

Thanks Uwe for the SQM info, it is a very valuable data for me.

I often get a reading of 21.2-21.3 at my home location or even better at my cottage (that is located in a starry sky park). So I guess I should be able to see some of these structures with 2cm less aperture and averted vision. Unfortunately nowadays we have high humidity and that does not really help glimpsing faint details.

SQM=21.2 ist hard to get at my place, but possible. I have a site farter away where I come down to 21.7 after rain. *That* is a great sky!

Uwe,

A very interesting project and as usual, excellent sketches. I know that the Webb Deep Sky Society in their 151 issue in 2010 has an article on polar ring galaxies and observing them. Here is a copy of the main page: LINK. It is an interesting article if you have access to it.

Thank you for that hint. After some searching I found the article online.

Great project! I guess you must push your observing skills to the limit.
