need help identifying correct vixen dovetail new
      #6442377 - 04/01/14 09:02 PM

I have a celestron nexstar 4gt(an older costco model that seems to have scarce documentation.) I bought a skyprodigy mount off of ebay and was going to stick this ota on the skyprodigy, but when i took apart the nexstar 4gt, the ota has no dovetail. I'm attaching a picture of what it has. http://www.flickr.com/photos/122149978@N08/13571469753/player/ There are 3 screw holes, for some reason the forward one is not centered from the other 2. I emailed celestron and they told me that it needed a vixen style dovetail, and to contact a vendor called losmandy for more specifics. I can't figure out what I need and losmandy hasn't responded to email. I even tried to call them and their system hung up on me. I tried a livechat on opt telescopes website and the rep on there suggested I just buy some mounting rings for the tube, which will add to the cost, which I would prefer to avoid.

Since that one screw hole is offset it doesn't seem like this would fit. http://www.losmandy.com/images/VUP4.jpg

a vixen rail is just under 1 3/4 in. wide, its OTA should unclamp from the SE mount and attach nicely to the Sky Prod. check the mount and see if the dovetail is not still attached to the mounting saddle.

since the pic is of the side we cant even tell if its a dovetail or some kind of mounting/riser block

can you post a picture of it on the OTA from the front of the scope so we can see its geometry.

yes, but it looks flat on all sides, in that case its not the right part, that's a after market add-on if its a losmandy on you scope, does it say losmandy or only look like it.

Uhhh, I posted a link to a vixen dovetail that i was wondering if it would work, I don't have a dovetail of any kind on my ota. I posted a different link with pictures of what is on there. Here are some more.

that looks like an older mak, all newer SE and Sky Prod. have vixen rails, I have to admit I've never seen that, and don't know if what you want to do is going to work now, maybe someone else will take over and have more info for you.

I believe it's about a 2005 model.

That optical tube isn't drilled for a dovetail; it is drilled for its mounting plate. There won't be a dovetail made to mount to it (a dovetail would be attached at both rear and front of the OTA and drilled to fit a particular OTA). Rings are the best answer.

Scopestuff is probably the cheapest; ADM is probably the best. Orion should have something in between.

It looks like for rings and the plate I would be looking at around 150 bucks. I only paid 100 for the nexstar 4gt to begin with. If I can't rig some way to make this work cheaply, I will probably just save my money. It was my intention from the start to just get a skyprodigy setup together for cheap.

A brand new 6" sct from celestron or meade can be had for just over 400 bucks.

Check Orion for dovetails and rings- economical, and they have them. However, you will have to drill holes in aluminum and countersink the fasteners. Do you have a drill press?

I don't HAVE a drill press, but i have access to one.

Update: the base for the sky prodigy arm arrived today. I put the legs from my other tripod on it, with a bit of drilling and shimming with washers.
