I downloaded the Bata version about 1 hour ago, so far I can connect to my D5100 and tested the following(albeit in the house)
Live View
Imaging
Frame & Focus
Bulb over a DSUSB cable
Very happy to say all works as good as BYEOS.
Now waiting for clear dark skies.
Thanks Guy

Eric

Where would one find a DSUSB cable?

For the D5100 you will need the DSUB and the DSCBL-15. This is the cable because the D5100 uses the MC-DC2 remote which has a mini-usb plug. I just ordered a D5100 so did my homework. Can't wait to have it modified by Brent. William

Is it possible - until I can gather the funds to pick up the kit from Shoestring Astronomy - to use the MC-DC2 shutter release cord in the interim or would I need that as an absolute requirement?

Guylain,

Would you consider this http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=6455517 cheaper version?
(Use RS232's RTS to assert the BULB state.)

Sure I would... but I'm not very good with electronic stuff myself... software yes, electronics not so much.

Guylain,

I'll make one for you (for free).
Do you want to leave the original MC-DC2 "control unit" in place for full manual (PC-less) operation, or take it out for tidiness?

Clear Skies!

Sure, if you want. It will give me a good cable to test.

I do not care about the original MC-DC2 itself, I will only use it for PC-based operation.

Thank you.

Guylain

Has the BackyardNikon been tested on Win8.1 64bit? I'm having trouble getting DSUB to connect to the Nikon D5100. It's probably just settings but it's frustrating right now. It does recognize the DSUB device but won't connect or recognize the camera. I really wanted to use Nebulosity3 since I'm familiar with it but can't get it to work. I wanted to know if anyone has tried BackyardNikon on a Win8.1/64bit system before I try it. William

Hi Will.

Please use my own forum to report issues in BackyardNIKON BETA release. I do not want to run around looking for reported issues... and having them all reported at the same place also ensures a good conversation with other testers as well.

BackyardNIKON is developed on W8.1 64bits and the DSUSB has been tested with the D5100.

If it does not connect it has noting to do with the DSUSB, that cable is for bulb only. You do have the regular USB cable connected as well... right?

I have not downloaded the BackyardNikon just yet. I was trying to get the Nebulosity3 working but wanted to make sure the BackyardNikon worked with Win8.1 64bit before trying it. Right now DSLR works so I know I have proper connection. I'll get the download soon and try your's. Thanks. William

Guylain,
Is there like a sample web site or something where one can see what this does? I have a Nikon D5000 and always wondered about astronomy app like the Cannon has... Is there a web page to check it out? the login link, is that for a Yahoo supported site? Thank you, Kasey

Use the link above to download the BETA setup file.

As for functionality, it is almost identical to BackyardEOS. Take a look at www.backyardeos.com.

BackyardNIKON, just like BackyardEOS, is very intuitive... that is what people tells me anyway

Hope this helps.

Guylain

So far I've got BackyardNikon working and it looks good. Is the price the same as the EOS? William

BackyardNIKON is not for sale just yet, I'm still out 2 months before production quality is reached to my high standard.

BETA testing started 1 week ago and everyone is welcome to try the beta version.

Download and additional info can be found here on the link below. You need to register on my forum to have access to it.
