Here's a sketch made from a half hour observation under Pickering 6 sky's at 162x with my Baader Fringe Killer and Neo for my 70mm achro. A fuller description is had in the refractor forum under "small refractor views of mars". At the end of a long and hard workday - pulling out the 70mm with its seeing friendly aperture was quite the charm.

A few notes: the cloud on the western limb was striking while the polar cap with meltband was actually surprisingly subtle. The middle was darker than the limb due to the irradiative effects if this brilliant peachy hued orb.

Pete

Pete,

Very nice capture of Mars. Your color is spot on.
That is exactly the way it looked to me on Saturday night near midnight.

Frank

Great Mars sketch, I also viewed Mars last night in my C6R, it looked very much as you have drawn , ice cap, melt line, some clouds and very faint or absent albedo features , Syris major was just rotating into view when I stopped my observation ,it popped out when I used my green filter..

Thanks for the kind words guys. Looking back on it - its amazing how blank this drawing is but its actually detailed for what it is. The center of mars appearing darker then brighter where it meets dark space was a persistent irradiation effect. I wonder if I could have negated it with an ND filter.

I'm glad the piece rings true with other observers - its satisfying to know I made some accurate record of it all.

Thanks again and for the telling of personal accounts.

Pete
