Lovely view of Mars! new
      #6475005 - 04/19/14 07:02 AM

Greetings all,

Finally some reasonable (well, reasonablish!) seeing arrived in Leicester and I was able to make some drawings of Mars. Although we're past opposition and closest approach, visually the planet looks much larger and brighter than it did in the previous opposition.

Drawing 1 was made in IL. Syrtis Major is close to the proc. limb, it's most northern part contained a bluish hue. In the south Hellas was brilliant and white in colour- no doubt the basin is filled with white clouds. Sinus Sabeus streaked across the disk and showed some interesting darker sections. Acidalium visible on the fol. limb and was a notable bluish grey colour. Bright region on the fol. limb in Chryse I took to be more clouds. The NPC is now very small and surrounded by a somewhat irregular Lowell Band

Drawing 2 (W#80A), a very similar view to drawing 1, but the W#80A emphasizes the white cloud activity much more.

Best wishes,
-Paul

Paul,

An excellent set of Mars observation showing many albedo features and cloud activity. Syrtis Major, Sinus Sabaeus, Sinus Meridiani, and Mare Acidalium are prominent. Impressive cloud over Hellas. Cloud activity over Aeria/Arabia. You also recorded an Equatorial Cloud Band (ECB) across Eden, Arabia, and Aeria. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Regards,
Carlos

You captured a classic face of Mars with this superb observation Paul. Beautifully rendered subtle details, exactly as it appears at the eyepiece.

Paul, excellent sketches. I like the inclusion of the blue filtered view.

Thanks all, glad you like them. by the way, I do recommend using a W#80A blue filter for Mars, not only does it enhance the contrast of white clouds, but it also really helps with the NPC and the surrounding Lowell band which can be quite hard to observe accurately under powers of less than x250.

Let's see how long we can follow the red planet for shall we? ;-)

Best wishes,
-Paul

BTW, the CM Long. for the drawing in IL should be 319.6 not 379.6! What a fool I am!

Paul,
A very splendid sketch. I will try the 80A. I tried a W21 the other night with some success.

Ken
