Mars collage from 4 sketchers on this forum new
      #6480497 - 04/22/14 03:31 AM

Hi everyone,

I noticed there have recently been posted - to my knowledge at least - 4 sketches of mars at roughly the same c.m. from people on this sketching forum. I thought it would be nice to put them together and took the liberty, if anyone objects I’ll remove it off course.

it consists of the following sketches:

David Gray 13 april 338°
Kris Smet 15 april 347°
Chris Nuttal 17 april 337°
Paul G Abel 18 april 320°

hope this doesn't offend anyone.

hi kris,
good idea -
it showed that here a high level quartett
of observers worked excellent at Mars !

Kris, I'm sure no one will object. It's great to see observations of the same area by different observers on different days, and compare the views. The most striking differences I see are the variations in limb haze and equatorial cloud band, and the different intensities of the dark areas. Thanks for putting four great observations together.

I like this a lot. Here is a collage from 2010 that was posted here first and then on ASOD. Maybe we need to do another.

glad people like it.

it seems there's a 'mini Mars frenzy' going on here with all the sketches being posted

that's a good idea, we should start collecting sketches!

Relative apertures to each would help. I like it - so long as the authors do.

Hi Kris perfectly fine to use my drawing – honoured

However in the this particular case it may be misleading without the context.

This was a particularly poor view (3” or 16.3”) with the seeing; and have had far finer views since (not that CM tho’!). In fact on the 19th Mars was so detailed in the 3” that my wife, even with her failing eyesight, could see a fair bit more than just the major features! It blew me away in the big D-K (and Saturn later!) and hope to post something of this and other recent fine views when I get the opportunity…… I might be retired but not enough hours in the day of late!

I have attached the original April 13 3” & 16.3” from my Mars 3 INCHER thread here with the contextual captioning – as reproduced here also.

Seeing IV / III-IV
Here the drawing on the left
[3” OG] ‘doctored’ to simulate/approximate
the impression in the 16.3” D-K (x365 with
Binoviewer and Apodizer).

Blue tint in the limb mists/clouds very marked.

This representing the best moments in a
pretty poor view for this instrument."

Dave.

Lovely David, I think Kris has done a delightful job in putting together this collage- I was surprised and delighted to find one of mine included!

RE the bluish haze, I have found this to be particularly noticeable on the fol. limb. Indeed in the observation here the haze seemed to be effecting the appearance of the Mare Acidalium. I wonder if the haze has been more prominent these last two apparitions. Attached are drawings I made two years ago near the time of opposition when a bluish haze was also quite prominent.

Best wishes,
-Paul

So not ignoring anyone!

My compliments, in the meantime, to you and all the fine contributors on here:

Just had to watch 2 episodes of 'Are You Being Served' after following your link Dave - nice to watch something from my childhood which wasn't total rubbish the second time around.
Even my 10 year old son loved it.
Thanks.

Kris,

An impressive mosaic of Mars observations made by talented observers on this forum. It is interesting to compare the features detected by different experienced observers over the same face of Mars.

Davis- Impressive observations of Mars using your 3-inch (76 cm) refractor and 16.3" DK reflector. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Paul- An impressive series of Mars observations over different longitudes. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Regards,
Carlos

Some of the finest renderings so far if mars are in this thread - what a fine selection by all. Going back and fourth between features and corresponding observers work is quite the pleasure here.

Just thought of something this portfolio made me think about...

What if we agreed on a common CM in the future so that more observations like this assemblage could be had? It'd be different dates and times for everyone just like here but we could mark out calendars for the "common CM" view. Mars rotates so slowly in difference to us we could make use of an entire week for such a thing.

It wouldn't preclude our own efforts got personal reasons and choices but if we all kicked out a common CM view it'd be a fine thing in the future.

Just a thought.

Pete

I think that sounds like fun Pete; and it would make for a great ASOD. Obviously the weather will play its part and we won't always get a full set each week, but comparing different sets of observers each time will be interesting in itself.

Hopefully no-one will find that it gets in the way of their personal projects, as it is supplementary.

Here is another idea...is there a program where you could combine folks sketched images, like a light curve plot, and average the detail into one image, the average of the combined sketches? That would be a very cool project and has been done at ALPO for their Mars map, combining numerous reports of albedo and atmospheric detail into one averaged image. The collage above really shows well, what the visual observer can accomplish and record with sketching...a real contribution to science, and is complimentary to imaging.
