Computer Fan....will it work?
      #6486151 - 04/24/14 05:42 PM

I just grabbed a computer case fan out of a dead computer (12v 1.5A) 4" to screw holes on a diagonal, it might fit my 8" Skyview Pro but I haven't gotten home yet to check. Anyway, it has 3 wires, red, black, and yellow. I will assume the red and black are the positive and negative wires. Is the yellow a ground wire?? Are my assumptions wrong and if so, how do they connect to a battery power source?

I would like to try and connect a fan to my scope to reduce cool down time.

Thanks.

Red= +
Blk= -
Yel= Fan speed (unused)
It should be similar to the fan that the GSO dobs come with.

I'm using a PC fan with a Radio Shack battery holder that holds 8 AA batteries. Works great.

Orion does sell fans for their scopes and they are fairly cheap.

It should work great - been there doin that. Do not however run it at 12 volts - way overkill, noisy and shaky. Six volts and its a charmer.

Yes i saw Orion's fan, but if I can get one working for free why not try it. If it fails, I can always fall back to the Orion fan.

ok..so now about the batteries. Is there a certain amount I should use...3?, 6?, 8? D cells? I sort of have to figure out a holder for them too....any ideas?

Oh, and thanks for the helpful replies.

I use a computer fan on my Orion XT10. I started off with a 9v battery using a holder from Radio Shack. I decided that the 9v batteries were going dead too fast so I switched to a AA holder from Radio Shack that holds 8 AA batteries. Both work fine but it ended up being cheaper for me to go the AA route so that's what I do now.

I use a boxy 6v flashlight battery that has the spring could coming out the top. Works great a really and lasts quite a while.

I use a 7 AH gel cell with my fans and run them through a converter to reduce the voltage and speed if necessary. The fans will run for several multi-hour sessions (at least) before the cell needs recharging.
