I've been making the most of the new moon recently and concentrated on DSO's.
I've nearly sketched all the Messier objects, just six more to go.

This is M51 from my local dark site in excellent transparency.

Careful sketch, and an interesting "feathery" view. In this regard it reminds me of Lord Rosse's. The dust lane on the S end of the SW arm is an excellent catch, few have seen it. With your aperture and at the SQM that you measured, this galaxy is an absolute marvel.

PS Oh, and a really good work on the Messier catalog! Fine blog, too.

Mike,

That is a stunning sketch of M 51.
All your sketches are beautifully done and your website is certainly worth a look for those that want to see what a 16 inch telescope will reveal visually.

Frank

Thankyou for your comments.

It was observed very close to the zenith in excellent transparency and was easily the best I have seen M51, it was simply stunning.

The dark site used was just 15 minutes from home.
There have been alot of changes in street lighting in the UK over the last couple of years, a move from the old orange coloured sodium lights to more eco friendly while light LED's seems to have made a great difference to the sky darkness at my dark sites. Just two years ago SQM readings were around 21.3, over the last winter that has now changed to around 21.6 on the best nights.
The British government occasional DO get things right!

That is one of the finest M51 sketches I've seen.

Wonderful sketch! I really like the bridge and how it fades out slightly. Good capture of the dust lane. I also like on your blog that on your sketches I can see the slight impact of dew on the paper while your observing. I enjoy your Messier sketches as well. Are you using the Mellish method?

Beautiful piece. Very nicely done. Four times the light gathering power if my newt. - yeah it'll show like that.

Stunning sketch Mike!
You've got me inspired to have another go at M51 in my MW 16" f/5 as soon as the skies clear

Mike,

An outstanding observation/rendering of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) in Canes Venatici. You have captured the spiral arms beautifully. The companion galaxy (NGC 5195) is also well rendered. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Your observations of various deep sky objects, the Moon, and Jupiter are outstanding on your web site. May I assume that you are using a white pastel pencil on black paper? Your technique is excellent.

I look forward to your future observations posted on this forum.

Regards,
Carlos

What an amazing sketch of M51!! In my 5" reflector all I have been able to see is a smudge at best.

If I may ask, where could one acquire a notebook such as the one you use to make your sketches?

Your sketches inspire me

Thanks again for the kind comments.

I've been using the Mellish technique (white pastels and charcoal) for a couple years now, it seems to work well to help show faint areas of galaxies and nebula. There are others who are far better than me using this technique but its what I've got used to now so its a case of 'if it aint broke dont fix it!'.

I just use a heavy weight sketch pad that I buy from Amazon, pretty much anything will work as long as the pages are quite thick which helps a little against dew.

Fantastic sketch! I enjoyed your website as well. As I scrolled through I saw your sketch of M 51 with the 12" scope. The difference between the 12 and 16 are pretty dramatic. I'm sure the great conditions also contributed to the sketch made with the 16."

Mike, that's an absolute cracker of a sketch, mate!

Sensational!

You have a very nice technique going there, well suited to laying down soft details. Probably the hardest thing to do with the Mellish Technique is those close and repeated fine details in galaxies. You've done brilliant job.

Alex.
