Three edge-on spiral galaxies new
      #6512784 - 05/07/14 08:47 PM Attachment (32 downloads)

I attended the Deep South Regional Stargaze Spring Scrimmage this year, and had a pretty good night hunting galaxies with my 15-inch truss-tube Dob. One object I paid a visit to was the bright Virgo galaxy NGC-4216 and two companions which were course much fainter. NGC-4206 was still fairly easy to spot at 111X but NGC-4222 was much tougher, it's close to 14th magnitude and sometimes faded in and out of sight through the sky glow. This is definitely one of the most impressive trios of galaxies, I haven't seen one elsewhere that contains three edge-on spirals albeit canted in different directions. Anyone with an 8 or 10-inch telescope from a dark site should be able to see all three, or at least the brighter two from a moderately light polluted are. All fit into a 30 arc-minute field of view.

Taras

Great view; I seem to remember this field from my Herschel 400 survey. And I like the background shading in the sketch.

Taras,

This is great. Edge-ons give that great spindle and needle view. In addition it is always spectacular to see galaxies clustered or paired. As Uwe says impressive.

Taras,

An excellent observation of a very interesting galaxy trio in Virgo. I will have to look at this trio soon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Superb sketch Taras! My favorite view of spiral galaxies is the "edge on" appearance. Seeing this group of three "edge on" in the same field is so cool! Very beautifully rendered.

Great capture. A view we all love to see. Something about a grouping of galaxies in the same eyepiece thats magical. Billions of stars all captured in your sketch.

Thanks for sharing.

Ken

hi Taras,

what a chance !
I sketched the three last month in the Provence/France
I show the star magnitude which I saw there.

Hello Christian, it seems what you saw closely matches what I saw. You've done a good job on your drawing as well, rendering the stars reasonably accurately is not easy. I don't know how you do your sketches, but I use for lack of a better word a red illuminated light box to do mine. The light from the red LED's backlights the paper and I then do rough drawings at the telescope. I do the finals later at home. Clear skies, I hope the weather's been kinder to you over the ocean, it's been bad most of the last few years in my region of the United States. I was glad to get the one good night that came along during the Spring Scrimmage I attended.

Taras

Superb and interesting view, thank you to you two to share this field. This is exactly the kind of target that I need to make a session soon.

Looks like a target worth visiting - nice work both of the sketchers.

By the way - looks to me that Taras had slightly better conditions during his session
