Mount Orion ED80T on Nexstar 8SE OTA?
      #6524887 - 05/14/14 12:57 PM

I'm looking at the following setup:

Celestron 8SE OTA
AZ-EQ6 mount
Orion ED80T (piggyback)

I already own the 8SE, and want a dual-purpose imaging/visual setup. This seems like an ideal combination to me, as the total load, including camera/CCD, will be only ~10kg (vs 20kg rating for the AZ-EQ6 mount), and I can use one OTA as a guidescope while I image with the other (depending on whether I want narrow or widefield imaging).

Two questions:
1. Does this type of setup make sense? (apart from to me!)

2. Has anyone tried mounting the ED80T on the C8 OTA? If so, what mounting bracket would I need for my C8?

Thanks for the feedback!

Make sure your mount can handle all that weight. I'd go with a small 50mm guide scope for the refractor instead of mating the other two together.

That's another option, yeah. But the total weight would be 5.6 kg (C8 OTA) + 2.5 kg (ED80T OTA) + camera/imager (0.5-2kg), for a total of ~8.5 to 10 kg. The AZ-EQ6 is rated to 20 kg load, so I'm 50% under spec, which seems ideal to me.

Seems legit to me... Alot of positive reviews too of people using it in AltAz mode.

ADM is the place to get the mounting hardware. Top notch outfit.

One consideration, have you included dew straps, dew shield and mounting hardware into your weight?

The dewshield for the C8 weighs only a few hundred grams. I don't currently use other dew control, but the dewstraps are light. Remember, I'm planning to underspec the mount by 50%, so there is a lot of margin here, following the 66% rule of thumb.

Imaging is usually a 50% rule of thumb if I am not mistaken.

Which I think you would still be under.

I just re-checked the load-bearing capacity of the AZ-EQ6 and it is actually 25 kg.

My max conceivable load with the 8SE OTA, the ED80T and imaging paraphernalia will be <12 kg, so I'm sweet on the 50% rule too
