Initially I was not going to post this sketch. However, the observations I made are consistent with other posts about the current dust charged atmosphere on Mars.

The principal points of this sketch are the apparent yellow color of the planet, the reduced contrast of features, as well as the reduced effect that planetary filters have on specific features. All of this can probably be attributed to the dust in the atmosphere. The smaller sketch shows how the white southern region was filtered by the Wratten #11 so that only the white Hellas Basin was visible.

This observation was done with my 102mm f/9.8 achromat at ~133x on my driven Polaris mount. In addition to unfiltered, the following filters were used: Wratten #8 light yellow, #11 yellow-green, and #82A light blue.

I like the back ground disk color you drawed on your report.
This is realistic I found. The nake eye looking to Mars get the same coloring rather than the pink-orange usual. Lot of features reported also.

Interesting report, and as Stanislas pointed out very realistic coloration. Thanks for posting your report/sketch of Mars and kind regards.
Clear skies.

Ed,

An excellent observation and report of the dust-laden atmosphere of the planet Mars. It will be interesting to see how long the dust stays suspended within the Martian atmosphere. It may be for some time. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Regards,
Carlos

Ed,

Very fine sketching.
At a star party viewing last evening the Mars feature were very subdued and indistinct at 233x. The yellow dust color was very easy to see over the globe.

I have too noticed reduced contrast on albedo features. I didn't know that there was a dust storm(s) going on.
