Motor focus new
      #6510899 - 05/06/14 09:54 PM

I am seriously considering addition of a Moto focus to my 8SE. I was thinking this would address any frustration with bumping the scope while focusing on the single fork arm with somewhat high load burden with an 8 inch scope. How helpful May this be?

Hi Joeman,

All vibrations caused by manually focusing the 8se were eliminated by fitting a motofocuser.
It made the 8se more of a joy to use.

Regards. Peter.

Another advantage with a JMI motofocus is the ability to make ultra-fine adjustments.

Orion has a motofocus designed for their refractors. With a little bit of DIY, you can fabricate a mounting bracket and coupler for the SE.

I tried for a very long time to just accept the focus shake on my 8se. Then I purchased anti-vibration pads for the tripod feet. Then I conciously tried to develop and use a 'very light touch' on the focus knob when focusing. Then I used a large foam rubber wheel from a model airplane over the focus knob to make fine adjustments easier. Then I installed and used a FeatherTouch Micro. Finally I removed that and switched to a JMI MF - it was like buying a whole new telescope. Problem solved. I still don't know why it took me so long.

I LOVE the JMI motofocus - no more vibrations while focusing, I feel I can really get it locked in. Good support too - I lost the locking thumbscrew and they sent me another one ASAP, no charge.

here's a link to someone who's motorized a c11, you might ask him too. Seems to have some nice photos posted.

Have you adapted this to a SCT focuser? If so I'd like to see some pictures. Looks interesting and would be a cheap alternative.

Another vote for the JMI motor focuser. I bought one for my C8 and it eliminate ALL the vibrations. Also when I upgraded to my CPC 1100 I was able to use the same JMI motor focuser with an adapter kit they sell. The fine focus you can get with a motor focuser is quite amazing!

Motor focusing, while it takes a little getting used to,turns a shaky scope into a pleasure to use.

That is the truth..BUT I became so used to it with my 8i that when I switched to a CPC1100 I still use the MF on the CPC...it becomes second nature like ridding a bike your brain no longer has to work to use a MF \

I agree. I had read in advance about the mental adjustment you will need to make when going to a MF. I also read about the possibility of a 'loss of feel' when focusing. I didn't find either of these things to be troublesome at all, and the benefits on my 8se, when observing from a concrete deck at my apartment, are excellent.
