Office chair for mounted bino use?
      #654905 - 10/24/05 09:04 AM

Has anyone tried mounting binocs on an office chair? This seems natural considering they swivel, recline, and are relatively light weight.
I would imagine it's been tried, but I couldn't find any posts here on CN. Although I'm considering trying to figure out some setup, I'm affraid it might not be stable enough.

Not bad. I don't recall whether Craig included this in his exhaustive ABMM thread.

I only wish I had the imagination and skills necessary to build some of these things. Craig's bino-cube makes me absolutely envious, and the optical-chair conversion (I forget who made it, sorry!) is something else that I leer at with thinly-veiled envy.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried mounting a 80mm short tube refractor on one of these things?

Don’t sell yourself short. Your imagination and enthusiasm for bino astronomy is immense. You or ANYONE else could change the future of how we view the stars with binoculars. This is a very new field and there are not really that many players. The designs for seated astronomy using bino’s are now (and have been) coming out of the woodwork. Anyone who has viewed the stars with bino’s has, or will have a stiff neck. The 45 or 90 degree options is an attempt to address the “stiff neck”, and is one of those options that everyone wants. As time and designs progress, you can bet that more 45 and 90 degree binos will appear on the market. A strong, stable comfortable (portable) viewing chair will be on every bino astronomy observers wish list. You can have a strong influence on design criteria of that new model. Keep the “What If’s?” coming.
The Star-Chair people should be proud, they did a great job at building something that the Bino-People wanted. Only problem is that it costs 5,000. With Star-Chair as the ultimate, Garage mechanics and dreamers will come up with other options…………..and they are.

By the way.............Im the guy doing the Optical Chair Conversion to Bino-Chair.............and its a work in progress. Seems like everyone I talk to about it either gives me a blank look or they cant stop talking about it, coming up with ideas on how to make it better. Its a great process.........and everyone has fun.

Mike,
I tried that once using a Stellarvue AT1010 on an early Bino Cube prototype. It didn't work that great due to the long focus travel needed for straight thru viewing. It was semi stable up to 40X IIRC.
