Help me choose which Tele Vue Delos to buy! new
      #6620566 - 07/06/14 10:01 PM

Telescope: Nexstar 6SE
Purpose: 80% Visual, 20% Astrophotography (Afocal)
Current Eyepieces: 7mm Pentax XW, 13mm TV Nagler T6, 24mm TV Panoptic, 31mm Baader Aspheric (Will be exchanged for a 2nd 13mm Nagler for Binoviewer, since it only has an AFOV of 55 degrees with the 1.25" adapter).

I want to add a Delos and maybe a 10mm Ethos down the line.

Do I get a 17.3mm Delos?

F/10 - w/2x Barlow - w/2.5x Powermate - w/Focal reducer/6.3/945mm

Pentax XW 7mm 215x - 3.5mm/430x - 2.8mm/535x - 135x
TV Nagler 13mm 115x - 6.5mm/230x - 5.2mm/288x - 72x
TV Delos 17.3mm 86x - 8.65mm/173x - 6.9mm/217x - 54x
TV Panoptic 24mm 62.5x - 12mm/125x - 9.6mm/156x - 40x

Would this have been the ideal setup?

350x 4.3mm
300x 5mm
250x 6mm
200x 7.5mm
150x 10mm
100 15mm
75x 20mm
50x 30mm

As with most of these questions I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, just personal preferences. So here's mine.

I use low power eyepieces to frame large objects or multiple objects in the same field. In this regard the Ethos excels. I use high power to observe detail in small objects. For this the near optical perfection of the Delos is great.

So personally I would flip your potential selections and get a 17 Ethos and a 10 Delos.

I much preferred the 17 Ethos over the 17.3 Delos at that focal length simply because of the expansive field of view. The 10 Ethos/Delos is a much harder choice and personally I would be happy with either. I settled on the Delos because there seems to be something so pure about the view it puts up, plus I prefer the ergonomics of the Delos as the magnification increases.

To be fair, the 10mm Ethos is about TWICE the cost of the equivalent Delos if purchasing new, and the 17mm Ethos is typically $300+ more than the 17.3mm Delos. You're correct that there is no right or wrong answer, but from a purely economic standpoint one can purchase two Delos eyepieces for the price of a single Ethos. That expansive field of view comes at a very high cost.

The only problem is that I don't want to use 2" eyepieces for now. Arghhh I really want a Delos lol... The 10mm Ethos is a fantastic eyepiece I heard and it frames the sun and moon perfectly! Now I'm more confused but better informed for sure, thanks guys.

I have a 7mm, 13mm, and 24mm, if I were to get a 10mm Ethos which Delos would you get? You guys are going to make me buy the 10mm Delos...I see it happening

Actually, at 10mm, I'd get the XW over the Delos., just a bit more comfortable to use. I'd love to see them expand the Delos line into longer f/ls, but I guess they figure thats what the pans are for.

In actuality, the 10mm Delos is pretty equal in tears of "ease of use" to the 10mm XW IMO.

Both are excellent and you can't lose with either one.

The 10mm XW will be a bit cheaper on the used market though.
