Got my 1st quality time with the moon and my 9.25. Taken with a cp4500 and 18mm plossl. Focus still looks soft. I'll need to work on that.

Gee, I stand back 20 yards and squint: Still looks like the moon to me.
I think you have a good picture there. Have you tried sharpening it in GIMP/PhotoShop? You didn't mention any post imaging processing.
A much better than average shot you have there. Some are lucky you were not in the moon contest we had last week. You know who you are too guys!

Zero processing. This is a raw pic. See the blue fringe on the limb? I think that's my mis-collimation.
I'm set up now and have Arcturus in my sights. The skies are crystal clear, but the seeing's very poor. I was hoping to have the scope dialed in before Mars rose, but doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Seriously, though. I was getting ready to plunk down the dough for Image Plus, when along came Orion and their AD copy for the ED 80. So I'll have to wait one more month before I can do any serious processing.
I still didn't capture the view right. When viewed through the ep, The moon had a very powdery look to it. I'm thinking of experimenting with the White balance settings when shooting the Moon.
Any suggestions?

I prefer Steves' second attempt. The small mountain range to the left of the filled in crater - about center of picture looks sharper and the shadows in the terminator look crisper too. The odd green tint is growning on me too. Can't explain that part though. No accounting for taste there.
Then the plains in the bottom half seem to have too much contrast for my taste with a crater in the lower left losing some detail in the ejecta that is in Steves' original and second posting.
Charles! You let me down! You were doing so well.
Guess we have a new topic: Critiquing processing. I hope others can jump in and offer opinions too. In other shots Charles has seen things I have not. This would a great place to pick up details we should or should not be looking for.
Steve; Check out www.gimp.org There are versions for Linux/Unix and Windows. One would think you could compile a version that would run under OS-X (anybody try that?). It's FREE! And very powerful. Will give Photoshop a run for its' money. I've used it for several years (still know little about it) and several others here use it - should be able to be offer much more help than I on using it.
I think you are on the right track.

Well, I finally got the camera and scope working together...uh, sort of. Single image taken with a CoolPix 885, auto everything (except flash), processed in Photoshop LE, individual color channels adjusted down a smidgen, brightness adjusted down a tad (sorry about the technical measurement units, but that 12" LX200 sure is bright), unsharp mask and despeckle, and image sized for the web. Hopefully, the picture is impressive enough to dissuade any English teachers lurking on the thread from cursing my poor grammar.

I'm seeing some blue bleed-through that didn't show up on the laptop monitor...down around the brightest areas. Dial down the blue channel, ya' think?

Oh, the picture sucks, thought that was obvious!
No no just kidding.  I did mean to ask what all that crud was on the bottom border. Looks like white spots. Evidence of over processing? I normally wouldn't guess that since the rest looks very good thought you may offer up a guess. Or somebody else.
I'm thinking we should encourage folks to post a before and after picture so dunder heads like me can see just what is gained (or lost) when processed. It will be slightly unfair since both will have to reduced in size for the web. Should be a wash since both are shrunk.
I'm thinking it would be useful for those of us learning the tricks of processing to see what can be done and how far it can be pushed.
You guys think that would be useful?

I gave it try using my C2100 UZ. I shot the pic through a 19mm Ultra eyepiece. The blue at the bottom in the pic is fog on the eyepiece by holding my hand to close to the eyepiece top element. The pic is not centered but, its my first time using this cam. I mainly use a 35mm camera for astronomy, and use my C2100UZ for vacation trips. But you guys looked to be having a lot fun so I gave it a try.
Scope used was my 6" f/8 APO. camera's f-stop set to 5.0 / ISO-200 / exposure time was 1/50 sec.

Looks pretty darn good I'd say. You have the focus issue tackled. Any chance of zooming in to count the sand grains?
Did you imply you are hand holding your camera? Or am I assuming too much about your comment explaining the blue?
Going to tackle Mars too?

You really brought out the details in that washed out area on the right. In both pictures the terminator looks great; lots of nice detail and textures going on.
I see some sawtooth effects on the upper edge. Is that from working with such a small file?

Yes Tom I did hand hold the camera. I'm going to take care of that. The next pics I take will not be hand held. I would have never thought that this camera would do this good. Mars will come soon, hopefuly by sunday.
