Great review! This one really gives the reader an idea of what to expect with this budget scope.
Thanks!

I received my DSX-90 yesterday and true to form, the clouds moved in by the time I got outside. My initial comment is that the gearing in the base that handles the azimuth sounds very uneven. I had the scope do a 360 and it stuttered at certain points in the travel. When I moved outside, the temperature had dropped to ~25F and after the scope had set for ~1/2 hour, the base refused to turn at all. After some gentle persuasion, I got it functional, but it almost seemed like the grease or lube had stiffened up. I will try training the drives today and see if it will align tonight. (Clouds willing!)
As to the optics ... I am quite pleased with the scope. I need to do some formal testing, but the 26mm eyepiece looking at the full moon through the clouds impressed my oldest son. It can only get better from here!
Thanks again for the review. George

Great review of the Meade DSX-90AT! I couldn't resist the price (only $275), so I purchased one from eBay from the Meade factory site. This is my first telescope, and I hope to share it with my 5 year old daughter, who is starting to ask questions about the stars. When the new telescope arrived from UPS at my door, the box was all wet from the rain. Luckily, the inner box was dry. Although the optics were great, there were 3 mechanical problems: 1. Two of the screws that hold the viewfinder were broken, 2. The handheld controller for the Autostar 497 would not "grip" the cable (it kept falling out), and 3. After using the telescope for a few minutes, the up/down arrows that control the vertical (altitude) movement of the telescope were not working. The motor would make a noise, but the telescope would not move. It was as if the inner clutch or gears were slipping. I tried loosening and tightening the vertical adjustment, but it did not help. I called Meade customer service, and they said that I should return the defective parts to them for an exchange. They said that UPS would arrive at my door to pick up the bad parts. I have been waiting a few days, but UPS has not shown up yet. I guess I will call Meade again, to make sure they didn't forget about me. Hopefully Meade can fix these problems!
