I would like to announce a freeware program I've just released called "Where
Is M13?". It's a simple application that displays the Messier objects in
their 3-D location within the Milky Way (or relative to the Milky Way for
galaxies).
I've noticed that most amateurs (myself included until recently) have little
idea where the objects they observe are actually located relative to the
Milky Way. In fact, the application gets its name from the fact that if you
ask most amateurs "Where is M13?" they will answer "In Hercules".
The included Help information explains a bit about the Galactic Coordinate
System that is fundamental to gaining an understanding of these 3-D
relationships.
"Where Is M13?" is a Java application and requires Java 1.3 or higher to run.
The web page explains where to get Java if you don't have it. Please read
about and download the application at:
Where Is M13?
This app is just a precursor to a more ambitions application along the same
lines. Please feel free to provide feedback (both positive and negative).

Very nice, Bill. I like the way it shows up the old GCs in the halo and OCs in the disk.
What would be really nice would be if you could rotate the galaxy, rather than just having top-down and side-on views. I'm guessing you've already thought of that and I know the maths is harder, I can recommend a good book for doing it in Java if that helps (helped a lot when I wrote some code a few years ago to visualize N-body simulations). NGC catalogue would be nice too!
Ben.
