Use DAWN FREE. In dishwashing liquid with perfumes, the perfumes are added by some kind of oil or other liquid that you don't want on your optics.

I use a mixture I keep in a little two once bottle. It's 2 parts 92% alcohol, 1 part water, 2-3 drops dawn free. I use it whenever I need it. Hasn't caused any damaged to any coatings in 5 years. Apply very sparingly, not the whole Qtip dipped in it, just the tip of the Qtip touched to it.

Pretty much what I use (90% isopropyl alcohol - filtered, no water), and I'd suggest a bit less Dawn in 2 ounces. I put 2 drops in a pint.

Update on my binocular collimation mess. I tried to put the optics back into their "original" position when I received them. I then tightened the left screw till it was just tight and then adjusted the right screw. Pop! right into place (as far as I could tell). Used Jupiter to help me. I think I'm good to go now...one day an optics guru will get to look through them and let me know for sure.

You are the MAN !!!

Knew you would fix it... Great, so when do we get our report on the new binos?

If you had described Jupiter through the new binos, I wouldn't have to ask Tom...

Scott...it was pretty lousy actually...a lot of moisture in the air and I was dodging clouds. Jupiter did look great, though, and al 4 moons were very briht. Actually spent more time on M42 and really enjoyed the view... lots of nebulosity but I was more concerned that images merged immediately with minimal light loss.

What I really needed to test was my TV 20mm plossl I got on friday. Now let me tell you, Jupiter in the 8" Dob with the 20mm (and also barlowed) was awesome! So was Saturn and M42! I have found an eyepiece I will truly love. comfortable to use, field stop right where it should be for me, did I mention comfortable and tack sharp? Also looked great in the 80/9 as well.

Looks good, and the views look good too. Can't beat that combo !!! Congrats on both the binos and the new EP.

The topic of cleaning solutions and techniques should be hammered out in a dedicated thread and then maybe the best points should be preseved in a "Best of..." post. This exact discussion came up a few weeks ago with greatly varying suggestions on how best to clean one's binos without removing the optical coating. I think it would be helpful to have this available if it doesn't exist already.

Just wanted to throw my experience in here re: the Burgess 15x70's.

I pickup up a pair in January, and I thought that things looked a little out inside the shop. Got em home and after trying them out more, I found they were *way* out (15 arcmin). I tried quite a bit to get the collimation right myself, but to no avail. I got them much closer, but couldn't seem to do better than 2-3' out.

I finally returned them to the shop to be fixed or replaced. They sent em back to Burgess, and gave me a new set from another shipment. I haven't got the new ones yet (been tied up too much lately), but hopefully they will be better.

As others have mentioned, I found the optical quality to be very good considering the price, but the QC wasn't spectacular.

We'll see how this set does.
