Didn't you just buy a Radian? I wonder...Sorry didn't mean to get smart. I know how you feel. last year here in TN it stayed cloudy the entire month of February. I am talking about all month. Even during the day.

Oh, it is painfull. I'm just beginning to feel the front end of the system that extends all the way to you. I was so looking forward to the triple shadows on Jupiter. Hoping for a miracle

I'm in maine. I feel for you all. I was thinking - back in the early 90's I spent one summer on the North Slope in a town called Point Lay. Look at it on a map of ALaska on the North coast. It was clear - super clear for the month I was there. What would it be like in the winter. Think about it - dark for months............How would I set up a GEM that far North. I remember the sun that summer never set - it just wen around the horizon fairly low? Anybody from the land of ice?

I've been lucky down here lately. The last couple of weeks have had many clear nights. I'm sure bad weather will catch up with me soon, though.

It's bad here too. I'm getting a really bad case of cabin fever.
I'll probably have to buy Epoch 2050 charts by the time I can get back outside.

Yes, I'm from Alaska.
Observing there is tricky. In summer, of course, there's 24-hour (sun)light pollution in most of the state; up north, much worse-- a longer stretch of 24-hour light. (And you wouldn't want to observe in summer anyway, as the state bird is the mosquito.) In Anchorage, where I'm from, the winter temps are mild, but up in Fairbanks they can reach -50F for long stretches.
There's also the issue of the aurora, which can indeed be stunning, but can make life tough for deep-sky observers. Oddly, most of the observers in the Anchorage area-- there's not an "official" club, but a semi-formal one-- are into expensive apos and planetary work... strange because the skies aren't usually very steady, when they ARE clear. I've been in several clubs around the world, and the Alaskans have the largest $$ per telescope ratio I've ever seen.

Ah, Point Lay, Oliktok, Deadhorse. All the garden spots!
I was stationed in Alaska for 6 years in Anchorage, but got to travel the state a lot.
I never owned a telescope up there, but enjoyed the Auroras alot. Don't miss the Ice Fog though!
