Thanks everyone! It's been real helpful knowing there's such wide range available and there's a difference between photo and sketch based lunar books.

I've got some of these books shortlisted but I can't get them as yet cos I spent a mini fortune on the Herald-Bobroff atlas, both volumes of the Night Sky's Observers guide and Binocular Astronomy as recommended by many here - I think that's too much to spend on books in one month. (Don't forget I've got to consider the exchange rate too!! )
In the meantime, I realised that the last issue of NightSky (Jan/Feb 2006) has a good article for beginners to check out the moon and I've got a couple of Astro books that have at least a chapter on observing the moon. I'll finish those up before I go into something more detailed.

Thanks guys!!

While I haven't seen all the books here I want to explain why I think Cherrington's book is so good: It has large pictures of how the moon appears - each night - over a lunar month.

I also have Rukl's updated Atlas, which shows more detail, but Cherrington is the tool that makes it easy to plan a night of lunar observing, or to figure what you just saw at a casual glance, since "Exploring the Moon through Binoculars..." makes it so easy to locate features relative to the terminator.

For that reason Cherrington's book is a good companion to any other atlas or map.

Best, Jay
