2" diagonal attatchment?? new
      #71443 - 03/14/04 04:30 PM Attachment (120 downloads)

I've one question regarding the set-up of the LX200SMT:

How shall the 2” diagonal be attached to the microfocuser? Please take a look at how I’ve attached it (see attached photo). Is that correct? On page 13 in the LX200 manual it says: "(D) 1.25" accessory adapter. SC accessory adapter (L) may be used in this position instead if Schmidt-Cassegrain accessories are being used. Do not use either adapter if using a 2" diagonal mirror”.

I’ve had to use the L-adapter to be able to attach the 2” diagonal. The problem I have now is that there is a huge moment on all these attachments (microfocuser, 2” UV filter etc etc) – at least when I’m attaching the MaxView II and the Barlow on top of the 2” diagonal!

What am I doing wrong?

Hi, Erik.

You do have a little more hardware in there than would be ideal. Meade has caused a deal of confusion by bundling that focuser with their telescopes. Since the focuser comes rigged for 2" accessories, the ideal arrangement is a 2" refractor-style diagonal inserted directly into it. You can also use an SCT-style diagonal with an SCT thread to 2" adaptor, as you have done, but it gets long and ungainly.

I can see how it would make sense to buy an SCT-style diagonal for an SCT - and that was correct for the earlier models without the focuser. By the way, you can remove the focuser and attach that diagonal directly to the scope and really shorten up the train if you have heavy stuff back there.

Thanks, John. I'll try to attach the 2" diagonal directly to the 2" Meade Skylight Filter/Dust Seal and skippe the microfocuser when useing the Balow, MaxViewII and the digital camera threaded on top of that! I'm a bit worried, however, that I then will have major problems with the focusing....

This is my first scope - so its all a bit new to me... Therefore - I'm not quite sure what you meant with the 2" refractor-style diagonal - what is that compared with the 2" SCT-style (Meade 929 diagonal mirror w UHTC)?

Tanks again!
Eirik

Eirik, there are two different styles in the Diagonal World, Refractor style & SCT style...

The SCT style will SCREW into the Rear-Cell/Microfocuser end of your scope, while the Refractor style has a smooth tube end, which will "slide" inside the Microfocuser end, instead of screwing to it's end, making it a "shorter" setup.

Clear skies!

Ivan

You need the Meade #930 Diagonal to mate with the microfocuser. The #929 is the one you have. I have the same problem as you. Using my 12" LX in a near vertical poistion the diagonal will smack the base using the 929 focuser.

On my LX-200 10" I have not only the microfocuser, but also two Van Slyke filter slot adaptors and a Televue 2" Everbrite, which has a rather (unnecessarily) long SCT thread adaptor. This is getting WAY out there, but it all fits up tight. I don't think there is anything at all wrong with the way you have yours rigged. Regards - Graham
