Here's another one, though it is not as well-travelled a site as Solar Voyager:

A quick n easy way to make a starry background..

Create a new file/image say 640x480 fill it Black with the paint bucket tool.

Add Noise with the Noise filter from the filters drop down menu. Unsharp Mask the noise a little to make the stars brighter, Desaturate the image and use level's to make a even starfield.

Should get something like this.Except i made it smaller than 640x480.

Tired of trying to create Earth-like worlds by hand?

Try PlanetGen!

PlanetGen Link

It uses fractals to create nice planets. Note that the planets will still need some color, tone, and saturation adjustments to get the terrain realistic and it does not do clouds - you have to do them by hand.

I'm trying to do the planet turorial in the first link. There is a step that says "Texture document open...place it right between the base and atmosphere layers". How do I do that? It's in a another document.

Not sure - I'd have to reread the tutorial - but you are probably supposed to copy the whole image from one document and paste it into a new layer in the other document.
