Clear skies to you too. I'm sure you have plenty of those up there in Nebraska. One of these years I'm going to have to check out the Nebraska Star Party. I've heard good things. SO far the DGM is the only filter I own but I'm looking forward to a more name brand Hydrogen Beta filter maybe in a 2", so this thread has been very interesting to me.

I just got my Lumicon UHC. The skies were poluted, but WOW. While I was dissapointed I couldn't even make out haziness in North America territory, and the Ring didn't seem much affected, the Dumbell was SOOOooo much clearer and defined, and I was able to see all three of the veils VERY clearly for the first time.

Giddy.

One key to the North America Nebula is field of view, which is probably difficult to get with your telescopes. I like using at least a two degree field of view, as that frames the object nicely. Also, under some mild light pollution, the nebula seems to be better seen using the OIII filter rather than the UHC. Dark adaptation is difficult to achieve in an urban or even a suburban setting, and that may limit how much you may see (unless you can get to a location that is completely shielded from local light sources). The proper power range is also important for effective filter use (between 3.5x and 9.9x per inch of aperture). Clear skies to you.

Amalia,
Could you give a translation for the list of symbols used in that German site you gave, for the compatability table of various eyepieces and filters please. My dictionary gives "gewinde" as "wreath", which doesn't help much! Sorry my German isn't up to much, despite speaking a German based language ( english).

I have seen this link in several posts since, but no one thanked me...

So:
Thank you, Amalia!

Thanks Amalia [as it's mine!] - can't beat a little spectroscope to give a concise 'view' and cut thro the cackle;-)
