Nova RS Oph in geosats field...
      #849963 - 03/02/06 12:47 PM Attachment (149 downloads)

...belatedly recorded before dawn this morning after in now clears my neighbour's trees low in southeast! Amazingly two geostationary earth satellites 'streak' across wide field in 30 seconds exposure. I estimate from several images that recurrent nova RS Oph is currently mag ~8.5 and clearly reddish in hue.

Nothing amazing about having geosats in your photo - it's geosat flaring season at the moment as we head towards the equinox. Some are visible with the naked eye.

Do you know which sats were visible?

The nova appeared distinctly red to me on Sunday morning.

Bruce - I've been recording geosats for years - try http://www.astroman.fsnet.co.uk/sat.htm - and no I've not identified these two. I just thought my target RS Oph with bonus geosats was unusual - but each to his own I suppose;-).

I'm not sure which star (on the photo) is RS. Could you possible mark it? I just checked with the AAVSO and your right RS is about mag 8.5 possibly a bit brighter.

Thanks for the help.

I can always get somebody over on the Seesat-L list to identify them if you like. It is a nice photo!

Rich - rather than mark RS Oph locally [and add more geosats!] it's marked on each side of the frame in red!

Finally got a chance to observe RS Ophiuchi. I estimated the brightness to be 8.4 this morning at 0532 UTC.
