I am a very happy user of a lx200 12 inch classic. Everything is running as it should. How long do you think that the lx200 can last for before a new scope is needed? I will be very sorry to get rid of this one but everything has a sell by date. This scope is about 2 years old.

Hi, Gordon.
The optical tube is good for many years yet with reasonable care; I've used Meade SCT's from the 80's that were still doing a very nice job.
That model was introduced in 1992 and I suspect most of the original ones are still running OK electrically and mechanically. There's not much wear involved (despite the frightening motor noise) in normal, well-balanced use. I had a 12" Classic and felt it was built to last.

The first LX200 I ever saw was my 12" and when I powered 'er up the first time I thought it was broken. The good news is that they all sound that way and it doesn't seem to hurt anything. The current LX200GPS doesn't sound much different.

I feel bad for my neighbors when I'm out there at 3:00 AM. Well , not really , but I do think about it.

The club to which I belong is heavy on Meades. For a while I had a Nexstar 11GPS and it was strange to be running in stealth mode while all those other machines were roaring at the sky.
I tried 'em all, though (and liked 'em all) but the Meade was what I ended up with so the noise must not bother me!

With the LX200 GPS can't you slow down the slew rate to lower the noise and power consumption???

Hi, Preston.
Yes, and some do. In fact, the 12" Classic has one firmware difference from the other models; it defaults to a speed one notch slower; I think that's to reduce drive train wear. I dunno whether they retained that difference in the current models or not. Probably not, since the firmware is changed every time it's updated.

Preston, I like my coffee grinder! The beep gives away my short attention span though.

awww..... I remember those beeps quite well. The LX200 isn't really all that noisey. Here in Alabama that noise might come in handy to scare off skunks, raccoons, dogs, mothers in laws, and other varmits.....

Yeah i agree , when i first set up the lx I was expecting the noise to be overbearing from the reports i've read , but i don't think it's to bad although i'm still using C batteries until I recive my power cables. Stuart

My Meade LX200 12" GPS was so loud I got use to it and when I bought my TAK with the EM-200 Temma II mount the first night I ran it I thought it wasn't working, because it only hums, yet slews as fast as the Meade. I do not miss that sound!
