All the arguments for and against have valid points, but maybe it's just about the basics, we should be polite and respectful to each other. And it's polite and respectful to ask either way.

If someone edits an image in an attempt to learn photoshop or whatever, and someone else with more skill can show them how they goofed, butchered the image, went too far, or just need a few tips, then everyone can learn from this.

Well said.
Learning and helping others learn is the spirit of the forum. If I didn't need help with image processing I would just post my stuff in the gallery. I know I lack processing experience and I'm willing to listen to those who are willing to take their time to help.

Fair enough guys, your images, your property, your say. I'm more than happy to ask if I feel the urge to enhance one of your images. But I imagine people won't want to wait around for permission. They would want to do it right then and there whilst they are in the mood looking at the computer. Hence, people just won't ask. And then, because they haven't asked, the forums have lost a small part of activity and maybe some processing knowledge that a noob could have found useful won't be available.
In no way though am I saying anything untoward about your decisions to be asked. I repsect your decisions. I'm merely pointing out a possible pattern that may happen on the forums if people have to ask.
At the end of the day, we're all here for this great hobby. Anyone that took an image without asking in the past did it with the best of intentions to share knowledge.

I think that if you post an image, people should be allowed to tinker with it in Photoshop etc. If you dont want people to do this, then dont post it, put it in a gallery or say that you dont want people to have a go at reprocessing. As it has already been said, this forum is all about learning - the person who is processing the image can learn as much about processing as the person who took the image. I can see how some people would not like their images to be reprocessed - if you are really happy with it, and then someone comes along and makes an attempt to improve it, people can get upset. However, most people are greatful in other people improving their image, and learning a bit themselves. In conclusion, I dont think that there is any problem with people processing other people's images. There shouldnt be any legal issues etc. because it is an educational experience for everyone involved. Anyway, this just my view. Thanks,

Suk I am a regular visitor to CN, though I don't often post (perhaps a bit more in recent times) - so hope you don't mind, but I voted in your poll.
I chose option A. I am not profficient in computer enhancement. I am still using PS version 5. I have a 7-year old computer & still run Windows 98! So my attitude is I can only learn & therefore if someone wants to play about with my images, I am more than happy for them to do so. Indeed several of the images on my website (credit has been given, accordingly) were enhanced for me by someone off a forum. For that, I can only express gratitude.
