Here's a photo of my observatory with the roof open. Each half roof is opened and closed using 12v electric winches housed in boxes either side of the observatory. It takes about 30 seconds to open or close the roof.

I really like that one Steve.
Especially the dual use roof support structure.

Certainly conveniently located as well as blending well with the house.

David
Thanks you it was fun to make and grandchildren love the swings...The OBS is still not finished and there is a lot more work to do but winter is coming in my part of the world most of the work IE: the Inside and Landscaping will have to wait for the spring.
It located next to my Heated Shop/Garage so I may construct a warm room in there.
Someone should start a thread about what to do different if you were to build another Roll off Observatory.
I could fill a whole page with things I would definitely change.
some of the wood I purchased I swear must have been swaying in the wind three day prior to me buying it.

Wow! There are really nice, and innovative, observatories in this link. I humbly submit my own if only to show what can be done with virtually no handyman skills

when observing, the scopes come out and the shed is open for use - it has all the basics: electrical, computer, red light on a dimmer switch, etc.

here's a link for more pictures on the construction:

thanks for looking

Here's a couple of pics of my observatory in Oxfordshire England - I completed it in Dec 07 but haven't had many opportunities to use it due to bad weather - looking forward to this season! More pics at www.sanddune.info

Wow! Great observatories, everyone!
Lots of great ideas.
Here's my "temporary fix" until I can get moved to a better climate and clearer skies.

Hey Don...were you hanging from a skyhook when you took that picture? Just too cool...kinda' like a Nike Hercules launcher.

What an amazing variety of designs! Now that I'm (almost) finished, here are a couple of photos of my humble shack.
