Here is my small backyard observatory. It's made of steel profiles and sheet metal (steel on the walls and aluminum on the roof).
It houses my 8" F/5 Newton, primarily intended for astrophotography.
The main problem in designing the observatory was very limited space in my backyard. I had to move it as far from my house as possible (to get more observable sky) and that's why the observatory is located in the NW corner of my backyard (only half a meter from northern and western backyard fence). The problem was how to move the roof in such a limited space. I couldn't use a slide rolling roof design because I have a small backyard and I wanted to leave some "free grass" there for my children to play
That's why I decided to use this design of side-rotating roof. When I lower the roof it needs only half a meter wide space beside the observatory (I have some cypress trees there that serve as some kind of a "brake" when I lower the roof). Thanks to counterweights, I can move the roof easily with one hand (I do that from inside, it's very convenient). Unlocking and removing the roof takes less than one minute! And pulling the roof back needs only 10 seconds (on one occasion the rain came in only few minutes and that design saved my equipment).
The scope was on the tripod when I took these images, but it is on the steel pier now (and higher than before). I can post more images of my setup later.
I have a lot more images of construction details and I'll be glad to help if someone wants to use my design or experience.
Best regards to all,
Gobart
P.S. I'll post three more images now in replies (is it possible to attach more images in the same post, and if possible, how?).

Hi Gobert,

A fantastic Observatory. Well done.

Also I thinkl you should write it up for Sky & Telescope Magazine.

Thanks!
I didn't make it myself, but I made all designs and a scaled model of it. Also I prepared a concrete observatory base. I engaged some specialists to do the main job (tinsmith and locksmith) to make and assemble the parts.
It was surprisingly cheap (half of the price of the telescope, all materials included).

I think so too, an excellent interpretation of a Flip Top Obs.

Gordan,it would also be great if you prepared an article for inclusion in the Observatory section here on Cloudy Nights.

What caught my eye the most aside from the design was the clean build and overall neatness. Mike

Mike, Steve, Tim and Carol,
Thank you for your kind comments!
After all, it seems that I'll have to write that article
The language is some problem, but I am sure that someone will do proofreading and make necessary corrections in my text.
Best wishes,
Gobart

Thank you, Carol! I never thought that my small observatory could be so interesting here...
So, I have to get to work (and it won't be so easy - english is not my language... but I hope that I'll finish the article in next week or two).
Greetings to all,
Gobart
