Here's the minimalist observatory that I designed to house my wedge mounted NexStar 11 and StellaCam 3 astro-video camera. It sports a lift-off roof with walls that fold down. I'll be sitting inside the house remotely contolling the scope, StellaCam, and laptop for autoguiding. See my blog for more details.

In this picture, the roof has been removed, the east wall has been lowered, and the scope is in the stowed position.

Now, all the walls have been lowered, power applied, and dew shield installed.

The removable roof (seen far left atop the retaining wall) and fold-down walls minimize the footprint, which preserves precious backyard real-estate. I'll be sitting inside the house, just to the right of the sliding glass doors.

By the looks of the warm room, you could have named it Goat Hill Hotel. Very nice, indeed! And welcome to CN!!

Here is a picture of my small 8'x8' Lightshield Observatory in SoCal. It had to be small due to limitations in the back yard. Built by myself in 2003. Originally housed a Nexstar 11 in alt/az mode and was comfortable for that purpose. Now has an A-P 1200GTO with A-P 155EDF and new Solarmax 90 which take up a lot more space. The roof is unique in that it is made from 1x1 mostly and sheathed with a very light weight foam sheet material (~1 1/2" thick). For weatherproofing, the sheathing is covered with aircraft covering fabric material 'doped' on in the same manner fabric covered airplanes are constructed. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone else, but it has worked well enough for me in the mild SoCal climate for the past 5 years.

You can guess the reason for the name.
