Carol, I have a good summary of my observatory in the last three issues of the Astromonical Society of Northern New England newsletter "Skylights". (www.asnne.org).
The roof is hinged and counter weighted with 80 pound concrete discs secured to extension arms. I can open the observatory in bout 30 seconds. It's great for making quick observations. My last observatory in Maine was a two stories, 16' x 20'affair with a roll off roof. This one is much more user friendly.

Peter, That is absolutely fantastic! I do believe this is the best of the most unusual Observatories I've seen!
Thanks again, for sharing it with us.

Nice effort Peter, would you consider combining the articles from "Sky Lights" into one and submitting it for inclusion in the Cloudy Nights Articles/Observatories section?

Here is a picture I took today of my observatory. The snow is starting to pile up quite a bit.

Mike, That is some snow you got. I used to golf at the course downtown with the floating green. What a gorgeous area you live.

Hi Steve,
I can do that. I'll check out the articles section to see how. I had some amazing views of the night sky from the west coast of the south island many years ago on a long bike ride. I hope they are still as good.

I'm so, so jealous of you all! It's so annoying - I live in a tiny village in the most rural part of England, yet I have 6 horrid sodium street lights in view and chimneys farting out hot-air all night long.
I've approached a couple of farmers to see if I could rent a 10ft x 10ft patch of land off them to put a shed, but you'd have thought I'd asked if I could burn their house down by the looks on their faces.

Yes, I just got it installed today. It took a little squeezing (the 152ED just barely fit as it was) but it's in there. My office used to be where that building is in the photo but a church bought the building and tore it down for an expansion. City Hall is right across the street from the church.

Hi John,
That's a neat picture and an impressive scope - does the snow ever slide in?
Cheers,
Keith

Hi, Keith.
It never has. The only time I've had snow in the observatory was while taking that photo (and that wasn't coming from the roof)!

I get that in the dome too - I never see it coming. I'll keep an eye out for more of the big scope over on the refractor forum.
Cheers,
Keith
