t hank's for the encouragement!
You are so very welcome. Once you get your observatory built you will wonder what took you so long. I just changed from a 12 inch SCT to the TAK 152. this picture was taken 2 nights ago when I first was able to do a rough polar alignment on my new setup. It was a 2 minute unguided exposure at 1600 ASA with a Nikon D-90 and no filters or other enhancements. I am quite pleased with my new setup!!

I think you are right, I am really looking forward to doing a precise Polar alignment as soon as the weather clears and I figure out how to use celestrons CGE Pectool. Then my Starshoot guider should really help with the long exposures-------

Really nice observatories posted here. Here's my humble rool off roof observatory. It's your garden variety garden shed 8'x10' converted. The observing room is 6'x8' and the soon to be completed warm room is 4'x8'. In the middle of Canada at almost 51 deg. North, we need it in the winter. Minus 40 is not uncommon. If your thinking of building one, go for it. The convience of it is really worth it in the long run.

Simplicity is the essence of functionality. I had an observatory located outside of Medicine Hat so I am familiar with the cold you speak of. Keeping the roof small makes it lighter and easier to roll in the cold. Do you have a track mounted up there and of so, how smooth does it roll?

Thanks for posting your Observatory! Nothing humble about it, having the convenience of viewing from it, plus your added warm room, you will have a great setup!
Enjoy!

The roof is extremely light, in fact I have to latch it down if there is any wind. I have 4 2inch castors that it rolls on and the rails were made of pine 2x4's. Very simple design and it works quite well. Very easy to roll. If you zoom in on the attached pic, you should see what I am talking about.

The observatory I built in 1986 with a hammer and a skillsaw that housed my Cave 10". I was 23 at the time.

Fantastic work! Did you include carpentry in your vocation? Do you still have this Observatory?
BTW, Welcome to Cloudy Nights!

Very nice. Is the domed observatory attached to the roll off and what equipment if any do you have in it?

Thank you. It sits on the property of the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club in Alberta, Canada and I donated it to them when I moved here in 1999. The scope that was in it is a Cave Astrola 10 inch f/5 which I am working to have shipped to my new home here in Kentucky....hopefully in a few weeks we will be reunited:-)
The domed observatory belonged to a friend who later when on to sell it and his scope inside it to another member for a mere $1000 - imagine a 12.5" f/6 on a fork BUILT for astrophotography and an observatory for that price. I know he regrets that now.
I believe the club now uses mine as a garden shed, but I plan to build another one when I finally get my scope here - this time learning from all my previous mistakes. I am not a carpenter, I just enjoy woodwork today among a lot of other things.
The observatory that I really liked is on here, it's similar to this, but it had the planter boxes and a couple of windows in it, looked like lap siding with cedar shingles...very beautiful...I can imagine it in my backyard allready.

Very civilized indeed.
What keeps the wheels on the rails for the roof? I'm guessing an upturned steel channel, but could tell in the pictures.
