I haven't seen a DSO for nearly two months. Until last night Last night was the first night that I have taken any notes, so bear with me if they aren't particually inspiring. I am just so happy I got out!!! There are a couple of sky charts I will include after this post for the satellite and Abell 1656. Observing notes 5/May/06 Moon at 1st quarter, seeing ~5/10 Saturn, 2205 6mm Plossl CD visible all the way around in fleeting moments. A dark band around the bottom third of the planet was visible. Just two moons, Titan and Rhea or Dione were visible. 6mm and barlow Similar amount of detail before except a thin shadow underneath the rings was visible. The CD was more easily visible and there more of the time. Satellite, 2208 Passing through the handle of Ursa Major. Could have been one of a number of satellites M51, 2305 Took a long time to find, but once found it was easy to find again 25mm 2 VERY faint blobs one above the other. Not sure which is the main galaxy – possibly the top one? Averted vision teased out some more detail but not a lot. Probably best to wait until no moon. Meteor, 2323 Travelled from SE to NW, around 40-50 degrees up. In the gap between Bootes and Corona Borealis. M13, 2320 Could be seen as a fuzzy patch in the finder 25mm A fuzzy blob, faint on the outside but gets more intense towards the centre. Some outer stars resolved. 6mm Beautiful with stars resolved right to core. Fills the view. Jupiter, 2345 4 moons visible in finder (Ganymede, Io, Europa and Callisto) 25mm Banding visible and moments of intense detail. Well framed. 6mm (+barlow) Possible GRS in upper left (confirmed). With barlow, focus was very difficult. Abell 1656, 0000 Easily found J 25mm The ‘triangle’ was found without much difficulty, but there was a star missing? There was a hint of a galaxy following the ‘opposite’ edge of the triangle. Would be much better with no moon I am sure. 73P I looked for the fragments but I just couldn't see them. I am surprised it was hazy for you.
