Can this be used on a Starblast, the mini dob version? If so I'd like to try this out with mine.
thanks

Carol, did I read that if we have the home depot inclinometer that we dont have to worry about the base being level?

Keith: You are correct; the inclinometer readings are consistent whether the base is level or not! One less chore so we can start observing. Carol

Hi Keith: Are you talking about the printed altitude degrees as the protractor? If so, they essentially do the same, but without the inclinometer, the base will have to be level. Carol

Carol, I picked up an inclinometer at lowes and a small magnet and a piece of that strap metal. I will pickup other at staples tomorrow. Do I need to put the altitude degrees on since Im usiing the other. Remember Im new to all this so Im having to small steps to make sure I get this right. Is there any particular 2-sided tape that you used, or will any do, and did you go all the way around with the tape?

Hi everyone,
Would a digital compass mounted on the base board work as well as the laminated pdf file? I know the original concept was to keep the cost down but some have indicated spending more on some of the items mentioned.
thanks,

Keith: you can just use the inclinometer. Just stick the magnetic bottom on "top" of the tube (for instance, when the tube is horizontal). You can move it up towards the front or back towards the primary, to pick the best place you can see it while viewing with your scope. I simply used the Scoth double-sided tape, & put about 4-6" strips around the base under the degree circle layout. You can use more if you want it completely adhered. Don't get discouraged, you are doing great! Carol

Regarding the Digital Compass instead of a scale. I looked into digital compass's and found that there weren't any out there at a reasonable price that would provide enough resolution. Many of the consumer products don't offer more that 5 degrees accuracy, getting to a degree or better seemed to be price prohibitive.
For about 20 bucks you can get the azimuth scale printed and laminated and have the really good resolution that a 20" diameter scale can offer, with no batteries, settings or electonic bugs to worry about. A better solution I think. (by Rod Nabholz)

ok, according to starry nights pro 5 m13 is at 69 alt at 8:53pm, according to where Vega is in OKC there is no way this inclinometer is reading right. Thats alsmost straight up.

M13 is very high in my sky now 8:40 mdt 70 degrees which is pretty high in the sky. Why don't you think this is correct? Carol

This is fascinating. Actually, if one puts an eq platform under a dob telescope, one can just work with the more common RA and DEC coordinates, once you zeroed in on a reference star. No need for palms/PDA/laptops anymore. Just an ordinary atlas with coordinates list wil do.
Am I correct in this?

Hi Carol, just got my ring cut out. When place it on the left viewing side like you with zero at the center, can you not like zero it on Antares and it still works. Thats out sooner than Polaris. If so once centered in my EP then just set the magnet marker to zero and Im set?

That works too. Just look up the coordinates for Antares and center Antares in your scope and set the coordinates on your base to match.

Keith: Using anything but Polaris, you wouldn't set the needle at "0". Using Antares, simply center it, look up the coordinates on your Palm, & set the degree circles according to those coordinates. Again, make sure that your Palm program is setup for the correct time & place. Confused you enough yet? Carol

Hey, I was born confused 43 years ago. Look at this pic and see if this will work. Im confused I guess about watch SkyArcher said. I just move my scopes to alt/az for Antares? If so where do I move the magnet too?
