All,
Many observers already know that Abell Planetaries are mega-tough. So how many of you actually observed the following five Abells?
Abell 9 in Auriga Abell 83 in Cassiopia Abell 7 in Lepus (not attempted yet) Abell 13 in Orion Abell 5 in Perseus
Those are the five I've missed and got everything else.
Hopefully this thread would generate some interest.

Hi Alvin,
absolutely great achievement to get so many abells yet During the last two years I was also very active to observe as many as possible. Most of the observations were done under very good alpine skies with a 16" Dob (see the notes) Here my notes to the 5 abells. - Abell 5...16"; 100x; [OIII]; fst 7,0; hardly noticable PN, after 30 minutes of observing I notice a faint hint of light, NE of the 14,1mag CS, not round, unsure observation - Abell 7...16"; 51x; [OIII]; fst 7,1; only with max. AP and [OIII], large, round PN, faint but can hold PN with averted vision, some faint structure, fainter to its middle, dark wedge from the west, PGC 16611 easy to detect, 10' NW of the PN, elongated 1:2 - Abell 9 first try...16"; 51x-225x; fst 7,2; at the north edge of M 38, not visible without filter - Abell 9 second try...16"; 225-360x; [OIII]; fst 6,5; now with [OIII] from Lumicon and Astronomic, again nothing to see - Abell 13...16"; 129x; [OIII]; fst 6,8; NW-part of the PN popping out in and out of view, can not hold it with averted vision, unsure observation - Abell 83...16"; 129x; [OIII]; fst 7,0; only with [OIII], can hold PN with averted vision, trapezoid of stars at the east You can also see these observations here Another, very informative site is the homepage of Stathis Kafalis There you can find a helpful overview over the oberservations of some german observers with different apertures. Perhaps a few questions to you. How were your notes of Abell 1, 16 and 28, Abells I missed. Thanks to you.

Hi Uwe,
Thanks for sharing your notes on my missing Abells. And nice websites!
Here are my observations for ...
Abell 1
22” f/4.1 (155 and 203x) – This planetary is an extremely faint round patch seen only 50% of the time with averted vision with an O-III filter. Its size is estimated to be about 40” across. No central star seen.
Eyepiece sketch with 22" f/4.1 at 203x (field size 24.3') Transparency: 7/10 NELM: 6.5

Abell 16
22” f/4.1 (155 and 203x) – This Abell is an extremely faint round patch with even surface brightness. This object requires averted vision and the O-III filter to bring it out. I have a very tough time seeing it with the UHC filter, perhaps about 50% of the time, whereas I saw it 100% of the time with the O-III. Estimated size is about 90” across. The central star is an averted vision star without any filters, but the nebula is invisible. A 9.2 magnitude star lies 3’ SW from the center and a 11.1 magnitude star lies 2’ south.
Eyepiece Sketch with 22" f/4.1 at 203x (field size 24.3') Transparency: 6/10 NELM: 6.0

Abell 28 - See my earlier thread about Abell 28 - this is a very very tough Abell. Only some of us at TSP got it with Larry Mitchell's 36" f/5 Obsession, but it was pretty low over the NWW horizon, about 30 degrees.
Anyways, here are my notes. I'd haveto say that I spent about two hours on this object.
22” f/4.1 (155 and 203x) – This planetary is very faint and large. It appears just a brightening of the background sky with a generally round shape with diffuse edges. No other features were seen. Estimated size is about 4’. Removing the O-III filter, the central star is an averted vision object. Overall, this Abell is very tough!
